Mobile fax? Why do you need that?

Fax is an enduring technology. While you may think that fax is declining, some reports show that the market is actually increasing, especially in the areas of fax over IP (FoIP), fax service and computer-based faxing. In fact, the fax industry is predicted to grow to $2.795 million by 2018.

One new technology that’s taking off is mobile fax, which, as the name suggests, involves using your mobile phone as a fax machine. I actually saw someone doing this recently and my initial reaction was, “What are you doing?” It turns out, there are actually hundreds of fax apps in the App Store. Why do these apps exist?

Basically, it has to do with speed of execution. If you are on the road, you can easily view faxes on your mobile device using one of these apps. Or, you can fax a photo you’ve taken. You can also receive a document via email and then fax it if you need. As you can see, it’s all about saving time. You don’t have to wait until you’re back at the office to take care of what you need to.

Some of these apps even allow you to customize cover pages and signatures. Many of them send an email confirmation once the fax is received, which is comforting, since even when I use a regular fax machine I’m always worried about the document going through.

Personally, I can’t wait until the day that I get a fax to my microwave. Crazy? Maybe. But who ever thought we’d see faxes sent to and from mobile phones?
