A month ago I wrote a blog about what I’d expect to see at Mobile World Congress. At that time, I expected to see 5G messaging, NFV, some VoLTE and video. So how did I do?
Based on being there just on Monday, and based on the fact that I don’t have time to go over to the smartphone and overall consumer gadget area and see what is going on there, and that I’m focusing more on infrastructure, I feel the following is what this MWC is about:
- VoLTE messaging is pretty large. I expected to see a lot but definitely there is more than I thought.
- NFV message is around, but not as much as I thought. Last year, we had a lot of NFV messaging from AT&T and Telefonica, etc. So I think a lot of vendors picked up on that. I believe we are in the figuring out / implementation stage now. So once the industry has some concrete rollouts and wins, then we’ll see more messaging.
- Yes I have seen some silly 5G messaging like I expected
- LOTS of wearables messaging. Wearables and the Internet of things is huge here. I’ll write more about this in the coming months but there is a lot of that here.
Other than that the show is the same. Same large crowds and energy as usual. It’s great.
