Smart Cities Will Make Our Lives Better

By: Anthony Trinh, Integrated Marketing Assistant, Alcatel-Lucent

The Internet of Things (IoT) is enabling the world around us to exchange data via a common network. This data will actually help us to understand the ‘things’ (objects and devices) in our lives and make sense of it. But how does the IoT improve our lives?

By 2020, the IoT will connect more than 26 billion devices and almost anything – your connected car, your dog’s collar, and even your entire city – will be able to communicate with each another. Cities are getting bigger and there are a lot of opportunities to streamline operations and manage scarce resources with IoT technology. Innovations in IoT technology are helping public and private organizations gain in-depth insight into the needs of their communities. Cities will become smart – developing strategies to improve their infrastructure, plan for long-term growth, create more energy-efficient environments, and keep people safe.

Big Data for Better Operations - The Use of Analytics in the Connected Home

By: Alan Marks, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Alcatel-Lucent’s Motive Customer Experience Solutions

The increasingly competitive broadband market has service providers facing new challenges as they deliver services to today’s Internet-connected home. One challenge is delivering technical support for the rapidly increasing number of Internet-connected devices in the home. Consumers are now connecting gaming consoles, smart phones, tablets and other devices to their residential gateway, and their broadband Internet service. In light of this increasingly complex and dynamic technological landscape, it is no surprise that service providers have turned to analytics to better understand their customers’ needs.

Arrived at ITEXPO Miami 2013

January 27, 2013

I made it to sunny Miami and just in time. The dry heat of Connecticut started to make the back of my hands bleed. I am not typically a "lotion person" but had no choice as I was starting to look like I belonged in a horror flick. What am I doing now you ask?

Sitting by the pool working in a T-shirt and shorts and enjoying the ability to do so without being distracted by the sound of my teeth chattering.
This week will be amazing.

In it I detailed how the world is moving faster and technology is playing a crucial role in allowing us to keep up. Some in fact are ahead of the curve. Of course when you are in a race to arm your decision-makers with relevant information, minutes and sometimes seconds count.

Limited Space Remains at ITEXPO SDN Workshop

January 23, 2013

Software-defined networking is considered by many to be one of the most important, and potentially disruptive, developments in networking since the rise of the Internet. To date, networks and connectivity have come first, and applications have followed. SDN turns this model on its head, approaching networking from an apps-first standpoint.

By now, you may be aware you have access to a software-defined networking workshop at ITEXPO (admission is included with ITEXPO registration) but you may not know space is filling up fast.

ITEXPO: Meet the One Man Who FIRED Steve Jobs

January 15, 2013

ITEXPO in Miami, FL takes place in about two weeks and it is going to be awesome. I will be covering the show in this space and wanted to start off by saying how excited I am that John Sculley will be part of the show – keynoting StartupCamp7 – one of the most exciting events at the conference. You can learn more about the situation between Jobs and Sculley in Forbes and on Tom Keating’s blog.

It’s worth noting that there is controversy as to whether Jobs was fired or demoted but whatever specifically happened is not as important as the fact that the incident started a cascade of events which changed music, entertainment, computing and mobility forever.
