Rapport Open APIs Increase Employee Productivity

By: Richard Hatheway, Director, Enterprise Communications Product Marketing, Rapport for Large Enterprise, Alcatel-Lucent

What is one of the biggest factors affecting employee productivity today? Recent studiesby the National Business Research Institute and the Pew Research Center indicate that not having the right technology tools to do their jobs is one of the most critical. From something as simple as having a cell phone to as advanced as having a customized app, having the right tool provides employees with a productivity boost.

Unfortunately though, many large enterprises are unable to take advantage of advances in technology due to old or outdated infrastructure and ICT technology silos. In addition, being locked in to one technology vendor often stymies the enterprise from being able to update the tools necessary to increase employee productivity.

For instance, something as simple as developing and deploying a new app is often a frustrating experience, as the enterprise must submit a request to the technology vendor for a new app to be developed, then wait until the vendor adds it to their development queue before finding out when to expect it. This often takes months, if not longer.

In the meantime, instead of waiting for the new app, many employees take the “shadow IT” route. They download rogue (i.e., non-IT-supported) apps that will allow them to move forward with at least some of the functionality they seek, even without IT support. While this work-around may provide some degree of productivity enhancement for the employee, wouldn’t it be better if the enterprise was able to either plug in existing best-of-breed third-party apps or develop and deploy its own apps without having to wait for a vendor to become involved?

Alcatel-Lucent thinks so, which is one of the reasons our new solution, Rapport™ for Large Enterprise, is generating so much interest. Rapport is a private cloud-based communications and collaboration solution designed specifically for the large enterprise.

Vintage VoIP 2002: Start a Call Center in South Asia

May 18, 2010

Topic: How to start and operate a successful call center in Pakistan.

Note by the author Suzanne Lombard: This is an excerpt of the tiny 26 page book written and published by me in 2002 with the goal to inspire people and organizations to study and practice English, use the Internet, voIP, and start a call center or back office in South Asia.

This version was targeted more to Pakistan. Some of the URLs and information are outdated, but I still get emails, IMs, Facebook wall notes and voip calls from those who have read it and tell me they are somewhere in the process of starting or working with a call center or back office: studying English, getting Internet, using voIP, and putting food on the table at home.

In the year 2000, major research firms predicted that by 2003 approximately US$60 billion was expected to be spent on call center services worldwide. It's a reality, and how much of that action does Pakistan have? How much does it deserve to have?

Enter "India Call Center" key words in google.com and get over 200 meaningful results.

The Collaborative Approach to Business is what I told this mobile app provider!

May 17, 2010

In my Linkedin network, a dear industry friend asked me, "How are things working out for you? With the rapidly shrinking VoIP prices, and free everywhere, can you make it happen?"

I responded with my normal long-winded manner:

We never were a rich company, but I think we have been pioneers and have a true entrepreneurial spirt. People say our customer service and marketing is good. They say we need to improve the language on our websites. I need to get a login to edit them because I know what needs to be changed.

I'm reading * The Worldly Philosophers, The Lives, Times and Ideas of the Great Economic Thinkers for the fifth time. Almost every page has a thought-provoking statement.

Today's ...

Robert L. Heilbroner, American economist and historian of economic thought said, "It is by the process of handing money around --- taking in each other's wash, it has been described --- that the economy is constantly revitalized."

Word Association Led me to 17 Year Old VoIP Singer and Entrepreneur

May 6, 2010

Something I enjoy doing ever since I heard Ray Bradbury talk about it on a documentary is word association. This morning, I typed in "art" and "voip" on Google and also Yahoo! search. I clicked on the first item of interest on VoIP-info and found it was actually a spam, nothing to do with VoIP.

Next, I found a 2005 VoIP Monitor article with the title "Aspiring Teen Pop Singer Launches Own VOIP Service." Intriguing!

The article states that in 2005, there were approximately 11,000 + VoIP providers but definitely room for a new kid on the block.

Awesome Announcement Omega Telecom and The Flat Planet Group

April 26, 2010

Congratulations to our dear industry friends David Uzan of Omega Telecom and Moshe Maeir of The Flat Planet and a Phone.

The Flat Planet Group, the company who can set up a phone system in a matter of minutes, and an example of this is Yahoo! stores, has announced it closed an agreement to buy Omega Telecom a licensed telecommunications carrier based in Cyprus.

In the past few years The Flat Planet Group acquired several call centers in Cyprus. This helped the company to become familiar with the local telecom market. The kinds of services that The Flat Planet Group was providing include local DID phone numbers in 50 countries with Dynamic Caller ID.
