How Smart Desk Phones Are Revolutionizing Enterprise Communications

By Mae Kowalke

Next gen communications technologies, including smart desk phones, are revolutionizing operations at enterprises. The ability to converge voice and data networks and provide real value to clients represents a major opportunity for companies like Alcatel-Lucent.

Two examples from recent Alcatel-Lucent case studies and white papers illustrate innovative ways new communications technology is being deployed to make a real-world difference.

First, there is Alcatel-Lucent’s campus safety systems, which provide peace of mind of educators, staff, students and parents. By monitoring high-risk areas, solutions like Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch My Teamwork Land Mobile Radio Conference and Collaboration system enable administrators, safety personnel and first responders to work seamlessly together in the development and implementation of robust emergency response plans.

Tools in this system make it possible quickly alert everyone on campus when emergencies occur, or there are incidents requiring lockdown or evacuation.

“With an integrated, converged solution, safety is improved by allowing each instructor to have a unique voice mail, facilitating integration with Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to enable dial-by-name, and enabling easy number portability as instructors change classrooms or offices,” Alcatel-Lucent explained in a recent white paper.

IP telephony is the backbone of this system, allowing integration among various communications systems like door and window sensors, cameras, smoke detectors, building control systems and video surveillance.

“Events can trigger alert notifications that can be sent over the IP network to any

number of devices,” Alcatel-Lucent said in the white paper. “And these notifications can include text and video feeds from IP video surveillance cameras near the site of the alarm.”

Another example of Alcatel-Lucent next gen communications technology being put to real-world relates to a different market sector: banking. For the past 12 years, BCSC Bank, a Columbian finance institution, has been using Alcatel-Lucent’s VPN Firewall Brick to ensure confidential handling of banking information for 2.6 million clients supported at 265 branch offices and 505 ATMs.

Over the years, this solution has adapted along with the bank’s needs, without compromising on the strengths BCSC found attractive in the first place: natural evolution supported by excellent technical assistance, technology on the forefront of banking regulation requirements, and ability to protect the bank’s image and reputation.

“The Alcatel-Lucent VPN Firewall Brick remains at the forefront of data security among Colombian banks,” explained Leonardo Bogota Gomez, Chief Information Security Officer at BCSC, in a case study.
