Microsoft Buys Yammer for $1.2B

June 27, 2012

Microsoft bought Yammer for $1.2 Billion. Yammer is supposed to add Social Media to Sharepoint.

" Yammer now has more than 5 million corporate users, including employees at 85 percent of the Fortune 500. The service allows employees to join a secure, private social network for free and then makes it easy for companies to convert a grassroots movement into companywide strategic initiative."

Agent Exclusivity

June 26, 2012

There is a lot of talk in the Channel about Agent exclusivity to Master Agencies. Most of the talk is from Masters.

Telecom is an industry of short memory. We forget everything.

We forget that MCI left many agents high and dry when they filed the largest BK in history (up to that time).

We forget that telecom companies have a history of BK - Cogent, Above.Net, MCI, XO, Integra, Williams, Global Crossing, Birch, MacLeod, Winstar, Adelphia, Covad and the other DLEC's (see here and here and here).

8x8: The Channel View

June 25, 2012

I spoke with a sub-agent of 8x8, Tom Palmer, President of Adrena Speed Solutions. Palmer has been selling 8x8 services for a while. He told me about the time (around 2006) when Packet8 was the service brand of 8x8 that had just switched from a residential service to a small business offering. Palmer says it has come a long way since then.

Talking with the CMO of 8x8

June 25, 2012

8x8 has hit $100 million in annual revenue, making them one of the top 3 Hosted VoIP providers in the US. I had a chance to interview Debbie Jo Severin, Chief Marketing Officer of 8x8 this week.

My first question was about what kinds of marketing 8x8 does. (I didn't know that the Packet8 brand was no longer in use.)

My Favorite CRM Gets J2'ed

June 25, 2012

There is a CRM system that comes with dial-in help (as the Optional VIP Sales Assistant Support of the Gold package). That's right! Salespeople can call in to an assistant that will type in the info and ask for whatever info they need from the CRM system. It's called Landslide and it was just acquired by J2 Global which owns eFax.

The VDI Trend

June 22, 2012

EarthLink launched TechCare. "EarthLink TechCare is a fully managed outsourced help desk that is customizable and scalable, enabling customers to relieve their overburdened IT staffs and refocus on more strategic initiatives, " states the press release. Basically, it is a tech support hotline for companies. This follows their launch of Cloud Workspace, a hosted desktop and virtualization application service. VDI and Managed IT are the new tools in the CLEC kit.

The New Channel Myth

June 21, 2012

The new myth about the Channel that everyone is spouting is doom and gloom. In Larry Walsh's latest, he talks about VAR's closing, vendors selling direct and other woes.

Here's some news for you: the Channel has ALWAYS competed with Direct for sales - VAR's and Agents. And we always will.

Can some of this stuff be sold via a website?

So You Want to Speak at ITEXPO

June 21, 2012

As we get ready for the conference season again, I would like to pass on some wisdom to you from Ice T's 10 rules of public speaking : "Practice. Then, practice some more." Please, just run through what you are going to say at least once before you sit in that panel chair. For IGNITE sessions, speakers typically practice 10 times for just 5 minutes!

And keynotes: Don't kill us with your presentation.

Bad News

June 18, 2012

I read all of HUgh Macleod's new book, Freedom is Blogging in Your Underwear [AFFIL], on the flight to Atlanta to speak at the ISP-CLEC show here. It certainly got me thinking.

Bad news..... new marketing is just the same as old marketing, juts with cooler tools.

Crazy News Today

Nokia To Slash 10,000 Jobs, Shut Several Manufacturing Sites.

Report: Microsoft Negotiating To Buy Yammer For $1 Billion-Plus! Can you say Bubble? Yammer is a private social network for business execs.

Easier to Use

June 14, 2012

"Collaboration, mobility and social networking are hot topics for enterprises, but the complexity of unified communications technology is contributing to low adoption rates, according to CompTIA's second annual Unified Communications and Collaboration Market Trends study." [source] The whole idea of technology is to make life easier for users, not more complicated. That's why in tech sales, the benefits and uses are stressed, not the features.

VoIP Supply has put out some guides to help businesses understand and adopt video conferencing. Why do you think Skype, SightSpeed, Vidyo and G+ Hangout are used for video chat or three-way video calling?

Poll: Cellphone Features

June 13, 2012

Cellcos have a tendency to shut off features in phones that they don't appreciate. We would have more wi-fi phones now, but cellcos didn't want phones to go off-net. Now that they have mismanaged their 2G/2.5G/3G/HPSA networks, they are re-thinking that decision. (The iPhone helped).

VZW and AT&T - go figure, right?

AT&T Workers Walk

June 13, 2012

According to the LA Times, on June 8th, AT&T workers in California and Nevada staged a work stoppage for a day to protest a memo that impugned their work ethic. AT&T is correct that without the union workers, AT&T would save a fortune. ILEC's have buckled under the strain of union benefits, payroll and pensions. Just because they negotiated these things doesn't mean that they should have planned for them.

Broadsoft Enhances Trunking

June 12, 2012

Besides the stock price changing, Broadsoft is enhancing SIP trunking.

"BroadSoft, Inc. has announced the release of an enhanced SIP trunking solution, enabling service providers to add unified communications and mobile applications to their SIP trunking offering with speed and ease. With it, service providers can increase the value of their SIP trunks and improve their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU)." [UCSttrategies]

I wonder if they are enhancing SIP licensing as well. One of the big issues for Broadsoft based service providers is the licensing fees, especially the maintenance payments on unused licenses.

The Answer to Flat Revenue

June 12, 2012

The markets are flat. Broadband, voice, TV and cellular. There are more cellphones activated than there are people in the US. The average home has 4 Internet enabled devices.

So what do you do if you are a Cellco and more than 60% of your revenue is wireless?

The New VoIP Giant

June 7, 2012

8x8 has hit $100 million in annual revenue making them the number 2 hosted VoIP provider (behind Comcast).  8X8 put up some good numbers last quarter.

At $100M, the company has proven that they can organically grow revenue. The churn is coming under control and the company is looking up-market.

Verizon is in the News a Lot

June 6, 2012

Hands off the Internet!

Sen. Alex Padilla: Bill will preserve hands-off regulatory approach toward VOIP.

VZW and T-Mobile are at odds over SpectrumCo spectrum with Verizon saying T-Mobile is hypocritical about spectrum. "Verizon told the FCC in a filing Monday that T-Mobile is two-faced in opposing the SpectrumCo deal because its parent company is telling investors it has excess network capacity while T-Mobile is telling the FCC it has too little." That seems to be typical for both T's - tell the FCC one thing and investors another.

So Much Stuff I Can't Get To

So many things to write about but just not enough time.

Top 5 Reasons to Work With an Agent

June 4, 2012

One thing you may have to answer as an Agent is "Why should someone buy from you?" They could call the carrier directly. Here are the top 5 reasons a business customer should work with an Agent.

Number 1: Saves time! Instead of calling around to collect quotes, the agent can do that more efficiently.
