Is the Channel Too Lazy to Sell Cloud?

March 29, 2013

Talking with channel managers lately in the Hosted UC (UCaaS) space, well, has been depressing to be honest. No one is having fun - or knocking it out of the park. Yes, there are pockets of success - mostly from verticals or niches (surprise!).

So one CM made the comment that channel partners are too lazy to sell cloud.

The UC Space Right Now

March 26, 2013

I was chatting with another industry blogger recently. We were discussing how there are a lot of VoIP Providers out there. I estimate it at over a thousand. However, I don't see the Hosted PBX space making huge strides.

What Did I Miss?

March 26, 2013

After making the news for supposedly canceling tele-working (which they only did for 200 distracted employees), Yahoo! is not acquiring. First, Y! bought Jybe, a social recommendation site. Now, "Yahoo announced it is snagging the mobile news reader Summly, created by 15-year-old Nick D'Aloisio," according to the USA Today.

I Want to be the FCC Chairman

March 25, 2013

The FCC is losing two key people - Commissioner Robert McDowell and the Chairman Julius Genachowski. It is difficult to be the FCC chairman, but I still want the job!

You have to balance politics and the 3 branches of govt with the Duopoly power, the effect to consumers.

"Julius Genachowski never let the will of Congress, the opinion of the American people, or even federal court decisions get in the way of his determination to regulate the Internet," writes the Heartland Institute.

Is the CMO the Toughest Job?

March 17, 2013

"It's no news that CMOs are among the most oft-booted execs. And a new survey from recruiter Korn/Ferry reports that most marketing insiders say when CMOs fail, the fault isn't with the individual, but with companies that aren't as open to change as they think they are."This quote from a MediaPost article is probably accurate. Another factor is that the CMO probably didn't have the Authority (and proper backing) to make the changes needed across the organization.

Organizations are made up of silos and fiefdoms.

Getting Rid of Copper

March 13, 2013

One way or another Verizon will get rid of the copper. After Storm Sandy, the Battery park central office was so damaged that VZ said they had to clip the copper. Too bad for anyone served by copper in the area. It affected CLEC's and customers.

Some Interesting Reads

March 13, 2013

Zayo CEO Dan Caruso wrote a good blog titled "Is Bandwidth Production Lucrative?". In the wake of Jim Crowe stepping down at Level3, Caruso's analysis of the fiber players in an interesting read.

Personally, I think these CEOs - Crowe, Hesse, and others - have to take more responsibility for revenue, integration, value and culture. The role of CEO is more than just setting some ambiguous vision that your reports then have to crystallize and execute on.

Complexities of Change

March 7, 2013

Nothing happens in a vacuum. Think about how many departments an order has to touch:

From the customer to the agent to the Channel Manager to the Ordering desk to Provisioning to Engineering to Deployment to the install tech to the router config to the LNP and 911.

In many companies - even small ones of 90 employees - these departments are silos.

Transitioning to Cloud is Hard

March 7, 2013

Making the business decision to migrate to offering cloud services is hard.

It is also expensive. The capital expenditure for data center equipment, services, software, routers, SANs, backup, bandwidth, licensing, etc. is only the beginning.

Sunset

March 6, 2013

We are watching the sunset of many things in telecom. The PSTN, growth, innovation, copper plant.

While there is much change going on in the industry, a lot hasn't changed.

VZ just pumped almost $350M into its Florida wireline infrastructure.
