COLOTRAQ Talking About DCI-TRAQ

August 31, 2015

Dany Bouchedid, CEO at COLOTRAQ, a data center and cloud master agency, joins me for a 7 minute podcast about their soon to be released "cloud based software for agents and clients" named DCI-TRAQ.

DCI-TRAQ will allow agents to get information, collateral and quotes about data center infrastructure, like PAAS, IAAS, VPS, colocation, virtualization, hybrid cloud. (Yes, every keyword I could think of.) Take a listen for yourself.

Note: I would classify it as a partner portal with a knowledge base, similar to the Microcorp"s Nautilus™, "the most advanced, accessible, back office portal for managing the sale and support of telecom and cloud solutions."

What's Up With the Data Center?

August 26, 2015

This morning there is an article that "RDG Capital Fund Management, the investment vehicle of Russell Glass and a significant shareholder of Internap, put out a public call today citing shareholder support for a sale of the company," InterNAP.

On top of that, rumors say that Verizon is shopping its data center business, formerly known as Terremark, owners and operators of the NAPs.

Windstream got a banker to shop its data center business, Hosting Solutions, which it bought in 4Q2010 for $310 Million.

Other recent deals include vXchnge buying 8 data centers from Sungard AS; and Digital Realty Trust, Inc.plunking down $1.886 Billion to private equity firms ABRY Partners and Berkshire Partners for TELx.

Experience-Centric

August 26, 2015

While search slideshare (now LinkedIn slideshare), I saw this slide, which sums up customer expectations as well as a conversation I saw having with Pete Davis of Panterra.

BYOD is not just an IT PITA (pain-in-the-@ss); it is about the user choosing. That is what Netflix is - user choice (including binge watching). That is what Consumerization of IT is.

What the Studies About UC Say

August 25, 2015

WOW! In a study of 1,000 businesses by Evolve IP, "71.5% were not very familiar with what "Unified Communications" actually is". You can scratch that off your SEO key word list right now.

The stat that "40 percent of participants are already using elements of a Unified Communications (UC) solution" is misleading because UC is a garbage term for many components of voice, video and comms.

On Content for Lead Gen

August 24, 2015

There is a new CMO Council study (along with affiliate, Content ROI Center) out called "Lead Flow That Helps You Grow" focused on demand generation strategy. The report takes a deep look into the struggle companies are having in producing quality lead flow that can advance sales performance. The study was conducted from North America-based research. It features perspectives from both qualitative interviews with marketing leaders at Informatica, Thermo Fisher Scientific, OpenText, CA Technologies and IBM, and key findings from a survey of marketing leaders across many industry sectors.

Vonage Picks Up Another One

August 20, 2015

Broadsoft is losing customers steadily. Vonage bought its third Broadsoft shop today with the announcement it is acquiring iCore for $92M. "The purchase price represents approximately 1.3 times estimated 2015 iCore revenues." [pr]

"iCore sells its solutions primarily through its large, direct field sales force, adding significant scale and a national footprint to Vonage's existing sales force.

Lessons from the AshleyMadison.com Hack

August 19, 2015

In case you live in a cage, a month ago a hacker group broke into Avid Life Media systems and commandeered all of their data. That's right - ALL.

ALM owns a couple of dating sites, most notably AshleyMadison.com which has the tag line: Life is short; have an affair. The hackers were mad that ALM is basically scamming its users.

Integra Expands With Fiber Buy

August 18, 2015

Integra is in the process of re-invention. Integra re-organized and revived the Electric Lightwave brand. CEO Kevin O'Hara was replaced by a board member and the HQ moved to Vancouver. But it looks like it will stick with its fiber first focus.

The VoIP/UC Round Up # 2920

August 16, 2015

MetTel's Gary Gluzman has a 2-part look at UC. He mentions Glip and Slack, which are taking off, but I think that much of the new app collective - WhatsApp, snapchat, even Slack - are just replacements for AOL chat - and honestly have not added much to the equation.

I recently explored how one client company used Slack. Everyone liked it; however, it didn't really work.

Fiber Play: NTELOS Bought by Shentel

August 13, 2015

It is all about fiber. Whether it is fiber-to-the-home or fiber lit buildings, the bankers love the word fiber. (I will refrain from jokes about constipated personalities here.)

CenturyLink keeps announcing fiber-to-the-home plans.

One Picture

August 11, 2015

"Organizations looking to capture the attention of their customers have become increasingly reliant on video, graphics and photography as part of the marketing arsenal," writes the CMO Council. Is it because we are more visual - or because the only thing we slow down for is a cat meme?

The CMO Council report, From Creativity to Content, is about the role of visual media in story-telling. A lot of the reason for visual media - (photos, video, illustrations, infographics and animated gifs - goes beyond "a picture is worth a thousand words". It has to do with Getting Attention.

A to Z: Alphabet and Zirtual

August 11, 2015

Google re-organized yesterday. Without a rumor about it escaping beforehand. (It shocked even Fred Wilson.) So the re-org puts Sergie and Larry in charge of Alphabet, the new holding company that now owns Google and all of the other stuff. Health, Labs, investments come out from under Google and full under Alphabet.

An Afternoon of VoIP News

August 5, 2015

Vitelity, a VoIP, SMS and Fax-over-IP provider, got bought by Onvoy. Onvoy got bought by Zayo. Zayo spun it off as a part of another Zayo entity (CII or Communications Infrastructure Investments).

Onvoy provides tandem and transit, wholesale VoIP, hosted PBX, long distance, SS7/database services, and call management solutions, including directory assistance and operator services. [TMC]

Is the Channel a Reflection of its Execs?

August 5, 2015

Can an executive with direct sales experience effectively manage a channel program?

There has been a lot of turn over lately in the telecom world. Old faces popping up in new spots. Quite a few people running channels now came from direct sales.

RUS, FCC, BIP, USF and Other Acronyms

August 3, 2015

The Big Boy telecom advocacy groups and pundits are spinning that the FCC is overstepping its bounds. Headline from Forbes and their law + technology columnist: FCC's First Net Neutrality Fine Heralds The Big Internet Chill. This was followed up by headlines about FCC Chair Wheeler over-stepping, arm-twisting and misusing his office.

AT&T gets a $100M fine for selling unlimited accounts that were impaired for big users.
