A Lesson from Airlines

September 28, 2015

Have you noticed that the airlines are a lot like the telecom industry? Both used to be regulated; now neither are. Both had a bubble resulting in bankruptcies. Consolidation happened in both industries - with a disaster for consumers.

Argument For Internet Regulation

September 24, 2015

This is the best argument I have seen for Internet regulation. It was also an insightful and humorous piece of writing about adtech, privacy, surveillance and other stuff. Yes, it is longer than most people's attention span, but worth the read.

"There's a myth in Silicon Valley that any attempt to regulate the Internet will destroy it, or that only software developers can understand the industry. When I flew over to give this talk, I wasn't worried about my plane falling out of the sky.

The Broadband Competition Problem

September 23, 2015

Big discussion over at AVC on Fred Wilson's blog post about the lack of broadband competition. After the broadband report came out, this apparently was a shock to some:

"Today, nearly 40 percent of American households either do not have the option of purchasing a wired 10 Mbps connection or they must buy it from a single provider. Three out of four Americans do not have a choice of providers for broadband at 25 Mbps, the speed increasingly recognized as a baseline for broadband access."

The discussion revolves around - surprise - arbitrage! There would be investment IF there was enough money in last mile residential; if regulation was lighter; if, if, if.

Is There Any Telecom Disruption?

September 22, 2015

Today, Fone.do was featured on ProductHunt. In the discussion, Aircall.io was mentioned.

Despite consolidation and analyst predictions of 20+% CAGR, we haven't really seen any real disruption in the space.

Low price by itself is not disruption.

The Cable Dominance Push

September 19, 2015

From USA Today, "Altice Group, a European telecom company controlled by French cable entrepreneur Patrick Drahi, has agreed to buy U.S. cable operator Cablevision (CVC) in a deal valued at $17.7 billion."

Altice already is buying smaller cableco Suddenlink for $9B. That makes for a big stake in the US market.

The Show Wrap-up

September 18, 2015

At the channel show in Boston, one thing seemed to be missing: the channel partners. The usual players were there but for the most part, everyone was asking where the agents were.

The East coast show is all cloud with many booths of with unknown logos. Granite, Bullseye, AT&T, Verizon, Windstream and, ooh, Sprint were the only telcos boothing it.

GTT Buys OSN

September 15, 2015

GTT has been a on an acquisition binge since 2009, when they bought WBS Connect. Then in 2011 they bought UK's PacketExchange to complement the business. Next, they added nLayer to the mix for just $18m.

They bought the old Tinet from the old Neutral Tandem (Inteliquent) for $54m, before listing on the NY Stock Exchange.

FCC Moves on Frontier and the Internet

September 14, 2015

So the FCC set the clock on the Charter-TWC merger. Part of the order explains how confidential information will be handled. (This is not the first merger with confidential company info.) The two Republican Commissioners on the FCC are complaining loudly -- as they have over every order passed by this Commission. FCC Commish Ajit Pai is often belittling the FCC CHair and his decisions publicly.

The Velocity of Change

September 11, 2015

I edited this message from President of the TCA, Jeff Ponts (also President of CloudMSP and COO/EVP of master agency Datatel Solutions). Much of what he says is poignant. The Velocity of Change is very striking to me.

The Velocity of Change and the Customer Experience

Next week many of you will be filling the tradeshow hall at the Cloud Partner Conference and Expo at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston September 16-18th. Channel Managers will be lined up to scan your badge, hand you tchotchkes, and updated flyers of their product offerings.

The Decline of TV

September 10, 2015

DSLReports writes that the Average Cable Bill is now $99, Up 39% Since 2010! Up 9% from last year!

Most of that increase is due to about 5 companies charging a premium for content -- and packaging channels that no one wants with the 1 channel viewers do want. [That is why a la carte channels will just not work.

The Tech is Everywhere

September 9, 2015

Watching the US Open quarterfinal match between Azarenko and Halep today, I got a view of how much technology is used for a tennis event. The cameras are everywhere, including the cameras used for the Chase Review. There was a challenge by Halep in game 3, when it took a very long time for the review to start. The umpire eventually said move on without the review.

My SIP Product Wish List

September 8, 2015

Star2Star announced StarSIP which is a SIP trunking service with some enhanced features. It made me start to think about what I would like to see in a SIP Trunk product.

It is all me-too service today: some form of dial-tone either OTT (over the top riding on the existing Internet bandwidth) or on a dedicated circuit. Small business like the straight up POTS replacement, right?

What Happened to Alteva?

September 4, 2015

Alteva was one of the pure play Broadsoft ITSPs. The exit strategy was to be acquired (as it was for almost all the CCA members). An RLEC, WVT, bought them in 2011 for $17m. Today, Momemtum, a wholesale Broadsoft shop, acquired Alteva (and will take them private) for $28.7m.

Alteva had a number of management change since 2011.

An SDN-WAN Primer for Channel Partners

September 1, 2015

I had an interesting conversation with Ken LaMere, Director of Channel Sales at Ecessa, that resulted in am email interview about SDN, software defined network, with Ken and Mike Siegler, VP Development & Technical Support. I was letting this acronym build momentum before I wrote about it. This is a good primer on SDN for channel partners.

Question 1: The Channel saw tw telecom delivering Dynamic Bandwidth prior to the Level3 acquisition.
