Tele-Pacific Looking Wireless

TelePacific Communications, the largest California-based CLEC providing integrated voice and data telecommunications services to the small and medium-sized business ("SMB") customer segment in California and Nevada, and MegaPath Inc., the leading provider of managed IP data, voice, and security services in North America, today announced a definitive agreement for TelePacific Communications to acquire MegaPath's NextWeb, Inc. subsidiary, dba Covad Wireless, a broadband fixed wireless carrier operating in California and Nevada.

Under the terms of the agreement, TelePacific Communications will gain approximately 3,500 profitable broadband fixed wireless business customers in California, Nevada and suburban Chicago through an all cash purchase of capital stock, per the press release. The footprint is complimentary so that helps.

This move just adds to the wireless moves that Tele-Pacific has made this quarter.

EarthLink Wins One

It looks like EarthLink won the auction for ONE Communications, the CLEC with a HQ in New England and network in Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and New England. EarthLink will pay $370M for ONE including $285M of debt.

EarthLink Business will end up as the combined operations and network of New Edge Networks, Deltacom and ONE.

This acquisition is good for EarthLink because there isn't that much overlap. Deltacom gave them the Southeast; ONE gives them the Northeast.



Contract Termination Class

A mandatory webinar on ETF, Contract Termination and Shortfall Charges today. The ILEC starts out by blaming tariffs for the clunky processes that require Agents to spend so much time and effort every single move, add, change and even upgrade. (One question was, "Do you even want more revenue from the customer? [Because you don't act like it!]).

What to Do With a Certified Agent?

On the Board call for the TCA (Technology Channel Association) discussing the the next step in the evolution of the Certified Telecom Professional (CTP).

The exam (and certification) is just $199 for member agents (and member VAR's) of TCA. Employees of our Vendor members (Motorola, Qwest, Megapath, Global Crossing, Intercall, XO, Level3, Netwolves, Star2Star, US Signal, Telnes Broadband and SalesStream) can also take the exam.

There has been a groundswell of buzz around the certification. The next step is to get carrier support for the CTP.



Sub-Agent Basics

I received an early morning call from the West Coast today from a woman who is a sub-agent selling Sprint mobile services. She's not having a good day. Here's a few reasons why:


  1. She isn't getting paid from her master agent.
  2. She doesn't have a contract in place with her master agent.
  3. She was unaware of charge-backs.
  4. She has no way to track commissions.
  5. She was not clear on who she could sell Sprint mobile services to.

Hence, her not getting paid.

The only non-profit trade association for telecom agents and VAR's, the Technology Channel Association (TCA) has launched a new and voluntary Certified Telecommunications Professional (CTP) program! This program will advance Agent business relationships and energize the indirect sales channel by:

  • Verifying the CTP understands critical industry fundamentals of the industry and how they apply to the end users and carriers

  • Furthering the stature and recognition of the industry-at-large
