Cisco's Business at Risk?

June 4, 2017

"CEO Chuck Robbins' first orders of business upon taking the helm at Cisco was to initiate a transformation away from hardware and shift to a software, cloud, and recurring revenue model. Last quarter was yet another example of Cisco's slow but steady progress. Total revenue declined 2% to $11.6 billion," reports Madison.com.

There is an interesting article on Business Insider about Facebook making switches and routers for themselves.

Telecom Tidbits # 2457

Some help with Robocalls. Pass it along.

Private equity firm, TPG, last year acquired RCN and Grande. Now they are grabbing Wave Broadband in the Northwest for $2.36B. They will combine all 3 - Wave, Grande and RCN - to make a larger MSO.

Some Thoughts for the Day (Part 2455)

May 3, 2017

Despite growing 93 percent from a year ago, Microsoft's Azure hasn't made a dent in Amazon's share of the $10 billion cloud market, according to Synergy Research. Amazon's AWS held steady at 33 percent of the worldwide market share of cloud infrastructure service providers in the first quarter, according to Synergy. And though it grew just 43 percent in the first quarter, Amazon's cloud revenue is more than the next five providers combines, Synergy estimates.

It isn't a sprint.

What Makes Amazon Tick

April 21, 2017

CB Insights did a break down of Amazon. It's interesting that it looks like: "Amazon is doubling down on AWS and its AI assistant, Alexa. It's seeking to become the central provider for AI-as-a-service."

"AWS is the biggest area Amazon is scaling up with more than 5600 jobs, which translates to about 33% of all the open listings." Hey, kids, here's where future jobs lie!

Is Amazon Going to Buy Vonage?

April 3, 2017

Amazon rolled out Chime, a Webex and GoToMeeting knock-off with Vonage as its partner for consumers and small biz. It turns out that Level3 is the partner for enterprise.

At EC17, Amazon launched a self-serve cloud contact center. (Once again Amazon took software it created and used internally and made it a commercial product like S3 and AWS.) The partner for this was Twilio.

The EC17 Overview: Experience Matters

March 30, 2017

Enterprise Connect seemed much bigger this year with 18 rows of booths, many of which were 20x20 or larger. There was much in the way of video conferencing and a couple of VR rooms.

The real buzz came from Amazon that launched Amazon Connect - Customer Contact Center in the Cloud. GE Appliances is one of Amazon Connect's initial customers (and shared the stage at EC17 with them).

Telecom Tidbits (part # 2450)

March 21, 2017

Amazon Using Trojan Horse Approach To Go After Smartphone Voice Market. Amazon is agressively pursuing the voice personal assistant market, focusing primarily on the short-term outlook of market penetration of Amazon Echo and Alexa. Amazon may have failed in the smartphone arena, but its tablets and voice assistants are winning.

In the business market, Alexa is integrated with Skyswitch, a Netsapiens softswitch operator.

M&A Update (#2448)

March 8, 2017

So many transactions. Companies are being bought and sold like a game of Go Fish.

Avaya sold its networking business to Extreme Networks for a paltry $100M (It is about $200M in revenue). That $100M does not make a dent in the billions in debt that Avaya is trying to scrape off in bankruptcy.

4 Problems with the UC Market

February 27, 2017

On a LinkedIn blog, Telarus co-founder Patrick Oborn writes about the fact that 72% of businesses have not transitioned to cloud communications. 72%!!!

After 15 years, 2000+ providers can only take a 28% handhold in the market?

The growth rate of Hosted PBX (HPBX/UC/UCaaS) has always been a hopeful bad guess.
