A New Portal, Mobile App Every Week

April 27, 2015

At the channel show, a company that develops mobile apps wanted to meet with me. They have a beta app with a large supplier. It does analytics and might make sharing collateral easier. It is just one more portal, one more app that gets announced.

No Magic in Telco

February 27, 2015

GENBAND and fring are looking to take some of the revenue back from OTT apps by creating an alliance for global service providers. I think they are trying to close the barn door long after the animals are gone, but, hey, it makes the news. Most consumer behavior - especially on devices - centers on user experience. Carriers suck at UX.

The Culture of Complacency

February 14, 2015

"In their book "In Search of Excellence," Tom Peters and Robert Waterman list a "bias for action" as the first of eight attributes that distinguish excellent and innovative companies. Many of the companies they studied were very "analytical in their approach to decision making, but they are not paralyzed by that fact (as so many others seem to be.) In many of these companies, the standard operating procedure is: 'Do it, fix it, try it.'" [WSJ]

Many companies are going through change -- mostly M&A change which isn't the change I mean. EarthLink and Cbeyond were going through very public change - like Dell, Microsoft and others.

Softphone From a Handset Maker

February 9, 2015

The Telecom Reseller has a report that Grandstream released an Android app.

"Grandstream Networks has announced the launch of Grandstream Wave, a free softphone application for Android devices. Grandstream Wave allows business and residential users to make and receive SIP based voice calls over Wi-Fi using any Android mobile devices running Android 4.0 or higher. This free app can be downloaded from the Google Pay Store and supports the integration of up to six SIP accounts, six-way voice conferencing and a number of telephony features."

CLECs releasing apps - like Voxox - isn't unusual.

There Were Some Bright Spots

December 26, 2014

There were some bright spots in 2014.

Canadian and UK companies reached out for consulting in 2014. Opportunities in LATAM also peaked on the horizon. But most of the attention was right here in the USA.

Innovation isn't About Replacement

August 25, 2014

In an article about the over-valuation of Uber, was this tidbit:

"In 1980, McKinsey & Company was commissioned by AT&T (whose Bell Labs had invented cellular telephony) to forecast cell phone penetration in the U.S. by 2000. The consultant's prediction, 900,000 subscribers, was less than 1% of the actual figure, 109 Million.

The Load on Cable

June 12, 2014

Yesterday, I wrote about how if your Netflix is buffering on your broadband connection, then how can you expect VoIP to work. I wanted to add to that post because I don't think that telecom salespeople (or channel partners) are doing a good job explaining two things to prospects: (1) the difference between dedicated Internet access and broadband; and (2) how vital Internet is to a business today.

Your business probably relies on some research online, right? We don't go to a library or have too many reference books or get the daily newspaper or monthly trade journal, so the news and info come from the web.

One Way to Differentiate

June 3, 2014

My agent business (activity) has picked up considerably lately. Someone found me via my blog looking for a phone system that would integrate with ACT and Outlook. Doing some research, ShoreTel Sky and 3CX came up. Talking with a master agent I found out that Digium and Broadsmart do the integration as well.

Tidbits and Things Part 134

February 5, 2014

On December 16, 2013, Littlejohn & Co., LLC, a private investment firm based in Greenwich, CT, announced the acquisition of Hostway Corp. a leading provider of hosted information technology solutions to over 500,000 small and medium-size businesses and enterprise customers. Littlejohn will serve as an active shareholder and board of directors in support of the Company's plan to capitalize on the tremendous demand for hosted IT solutions. [via Hostway pr]. Hostway announced a new CEO today, Robert Boles.

AT&T To Take on OTT

February 2, 2014

AT&T and Beats Music rolled out a music service during the Super Bowl. AT&T is taking on Pandora, Spotify and Apple iTunes.

Bloomberg reports that "Music-streaming services need 5 million to 10 million paying customers to be profitable after paying licensing fees to rights holders, according to Roger Entner, an analyst with Recon Analytics in Boston."

The cellcos are losing ground (and margin) to OTT (over-the-top) companies like Spotify, WhatsApp, Snalchat and more. AT&T has been funding hack-a-thons for a couple of years to get an app store off the ground.
