Rural Acquisitions Happen Too

April 18, 2016

What if you were a company that long ago was created to be a volume buying group for RLECs and owned by a bunch of IOCs? Then time passes and long distance minutes are declining. The FCC mandates that even RLECs have to transition from TDM to IP for voice. Oh, and that RLEC funding through the Universal Service fund was going to transition from voice lines to broadband lines.

Why Do You Look at an iPhone That Way?

April 7, 2016

The promise of the iPhone wasn't that you could make HD voice calls. Actually the original promise was a beautifully designed cellphone. Then it became more with iTunes and the app store and the ecosystem.

The ecosystem is the environment around software like Apple, Amazon, Google or Microsoft.

What Happens in Vegas

March 17, 2016

At the Channel Partners Expo in Vegas, rumors are running wild. Metaswitch-Genband being settled in patent court. Polycom-Mitel cuz money.

Another Broadsoft client gets bought. MagicJack (yes, magicjack) decides to over-bid in order to not be the bridesmaid again.

TelePacific Goes National

March 2, 2016

TelePacific announced the acquisition of DSCI yesterday. This move provides many benefits to the service provider.

For one, it gives TPAC a national presence. TPAC's business (and network) is in Cali, Nevada and Texas.

VoIP Tidbits (Part 2430)

February 29, 2016

ANPI announced that it was launching a residential package. That will be hard to do on a Broadsoft platform, because the licensing is deemed too expensive. One telecom exec mentioned that ANPI was following the Vonage model. I disagree.

Some M&A

February 10, 2016

ThinkingPhones has re-branded as Fuze, a video conferencing company it bought recently. Apparently they are running away from the idea of phones.

Muni merger in Virginia: "Duffield, Virginia-based Sunset Digital Communications announced last week that it will purchase the OptiNet Division of Bristol Virginia Utilities Authority, which operates a broadband network in Bristol, Virginia."

GTT made another acquisition; this time it picks off Telnes Broadband for just $18M.

The Gist of ITEXPO

January 29, 2016

ITEXPO just ended in Fort Lauderdale, where it was for quite a few years. (The Miami Beach Convention Center is being renovated.) Here are a few things I saw at ITEXPO:

SD-WAN is a better term than SDN (software defined network) and dynamic bandwidth is a better way to talk about it to your customers.

The data center is a pivotal part of any network - VoIP, Enterprise or Service Provider.

Broadsoft's UCaaS Predictions

January 21, 2016

Broadsoft did a global survey of UCaaS penetration.

"The survey of 129 global service provider and industry leader respondents revealed cloud UC market penetration could grow 3x in the large enterprise segment, 7x in the mid-market segment and almost 5x in the small business segment by 2020."

Globally they surveyed 129 providers, which is less than half of just its base of US customers, about a third of its global clientele and about 5% of Hosted VoIP providers in North America. A small sample.

Uh Oh, Microsoft is Closing the Gaps

January 15, 2016

Some folks think I am picking on the VoIP space (see this post). Maybe I am. Hosted PBX started for me in 2003 when Broadsoft's second customer rolled out its platform and signed me up as their first agent. It has been a struggle ever since.
