Cable is Different

June 1, 2011

When selling cable services, it is different from selling most telco services. For one, the voice services are all digital and SIP. In many cases, voice is delivered on a separate VLAN or even physical path. (It's not a dynamically allocated converged circuit.)

Data services are delivered differently too.

Are VAR's the New Agent?

May 27, 2011

The Channel seems to be turning their back on the traditional telecom agent. All eyes are on the VAR space. Even Master Agents are out chasing the VAR's. (For example, Telephony Partners has a white paper out to explain why VAR's should work with a master agent like TP.)

From talks with cable execs, it appears that the traditional telecom agent scares the C-suite at the Duopoly.

A Message for Dan Hesse

April 26, 2011

The merger of AT&T and T-Mobile will likely have extreme anti-competitive effects on the mobile industry. Certainly, the DOJ and the two F-Agencies (FTC and FCC) need to take note that mobile is churning the service economy of America right now and this merger could derail that. That being said, I have this to say to the CEO of Sprint, Dan Hesse:

You have lawyers and lobbyists and SVP's. Let them carry this fight for you.

VARs are Replacing Agents

April 3, 2011

In an article in Channel Partners magazine, Master Agents discuss how all their future growth will come from VAR's. Carriers are chasing VAR's for any growth in Channel numbers. Where does that leave the Agents?

Well, Agents can partner with VAR's to be the telecom provisioning department. Or Agents can start getting uncomfortable or irrelevant.

Exam the fact that most Agents do not want to sell cellular.

A Little Anti-Trust Rant

March 30, 2011

A CLEC filed suit against VZ for anti-trust this week. For those of you unfamiliar with operating a CLEC, ISP or OTT VoIP company, let me explain what I have seen over 11 years of servicing this industry.

Ma Bell has long standing promotions to compete against any quote from TWT. So long standing that by now they should be tariff rates.

Tariff is what the employees of the ILEC's consistently blame everything on. Tariffs are written by the ILEC and can be changed at will.

NetWolves and AboveNet Combine with Agent

March 16, 2011

From the Netwolves newsletter comes a story about 2 carriers teaming up and helping an Agent make a big sale.

Customer has multiple locations and wants Ethernet Service in all of their sites. They want the carrier to provide fully managed routers and switches and they want it all on a single invoice. What do you do?

VoIP Consolidation Well Underway

February 22, 2011

There's been some M&A among VoIP Providers this year but there is more on the horizon. CLEC's are looking to get in the game with an acquisition. Indeed EarthLink did just that with its quiet acquisition of STS Telecom, a former UNE-P then Sylantro shop in South Florida (to go with its purchase of Deltacom).

Other ITSP's are actively seeking an acquisition or hoping one will come along.

Consumer Telecom Dropping

February 21, 2011

With the latest quarterly financial reporting in, one item stands out: CenturyLink, Qwest, Windstream and EarthLink are all experiencing consumer decline.

"CenturyLink Inc and Qwest Communications International Inc both posted quarterly revenue declines in what is expected to be their last reports as independent telephone operators, as customers disconnected their home phones in favor of cellphones." [Reuters]

In the case of Windstream, Morningstar reports that "Consumer revenue, which accounts for about 35% of the business directly, dropped 3% versus a year ago, in line with the prior quarter and a significant improvement versus the first half of 2010. Demand trends weakened, however, with phone customer losses increasing sharply versus both the prior year and quarter. Internet access and television customer growth also slowed to a trickle during the quarter."
