What Will You Be Selling in 2012?

November 16, 2011

Most channel executives will tell you that the 2 biggest products for 2012 will be MPLS and SIP.  It makes sense since the PSTN is being phased out as the telecom infrastructure turns to an all-IP network. It also makes sense that not all traffic can travel (safely, securely or timely) on the Internet, so MPLS becomes the WAN solution for control and privacy.

Ethernet will be the product of choice. No more T1.

There's No Spectrum Shortage

October 31, 2011

"US mobile networks currently have access to 538Mhz of radio spectrum -- with a further 300Mhz due to be made available -- but only 192Mhz is currently being used, according to an analyst note from Citi Investment Research & Analysis," from an article on Cellular News.

from Blough Turner's blog.

It kind of destroys (yet again) the argument of AT&T for buying T-Mobile. These carriers have the spectrum, which they have either NOT DEPLOYED or, as AT&T was polite as to tell Congress, have mismanaged what they have deployed.

It's Monday So Lots Happened

October 17, 2011

Polycom bought Vivu, a video collaboration company, to help Polycom push it's Presence gear. Video, video, video. Yet I never have video calls or video call requests. To me, I wish you would work on the phone part.

The Sprint Rumor Mill

October 5, 2011

We all know that Sprint is finally getting the iPhone - the 4S, not the 5. Is that really so terrible? apparently, Sprint had to guarantee $20B worth of iPhones - about 30 million phones over 4 years. Depending on who you believe - WSJ, BGR, or the Apple Insider - Sprint will be getting the iPhone 5 exclusively.

MVNO and Name Changes

October 3, 2011

Here at COMPTEL there have been some announcements. The big one is that Sprint has signed up two new MVNO's - XO and Easton Telecom. Easton Telecom is a reseller CLEC that has contracts with 100+ carriers (according to its PR). The interesting move comes from XO whose interim CEO inked an MVNO deal with Sprint.

There's Disruption Everywhere

September 28, 2011

As folks move to VoIP and cell, the PSTN has to come down. Meanwhile, since fees are lower on VoIP and cell servcies, 911 centers can't afford to operate. As we move away from regulation - especially in Florida - phone calls stop being connected. Call termination issues increase.

Tech Data Becomes a Master

September 19, 2011

Tech Data announced a joint venture with Brightstar called ActivateIT, branded as TDMobility. In this case, TD will become a master agent for its VARs to offer not just cellular service from the likes of Sprint, ATT and T-Mobile, but M2M, devices and the works.

It will be interesting to see how TD transforms from hardware distributor, which has a very different financial model, to a cloud provider and a master agent.

The Master Agent has to deal with telcos. Cellcos are notorious for commission issues, moreso than other carriers.

A Couple of M&A Items

September 9, 2011

It seems that Apple put in a bid for Dropbox for $800M (for $100M in revenue). But Dropbox decided to get another round of funds and think IPO instead. [BusinessInsider]

Cablevision will resell Sprint wireless service through its Optimum Business unit. Quad play for SMB.

A Little Merger Opposition

August 31, 2011

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) held a news conference to oppose the AT&T/T-Mobile merger. According to this report, "At the news conference, Conyers said, "I've never seen a merger that didn't lose jobs." .... At the hearing the next day, Conyers went further, stating, "I have never met a merger that I liked. They always cost jobs, and they create less competition, and they hurt consumers.""

The Leaked AT&T Document

August 26, 2011

I have been sitting on this story for a while because I wanted to do a long piece about it. I'm just not going to get around to that.

The rumored breakup fee for the ATT-T-Mobile merger is like $6B. At that rate, Ma Bell will do anything to have this merger go through.
