Tele-Pacific Looking Wireless

TelePacific Communications, the largest California-based CLEC providing integrated voice and data telecommunications services to the small and medium-sized business ("SMB") customer segment in California and Nevada, and MegaPath Inc., the leading provider of managed IP data, voice, and security services in North America, today announced a definitive agreement for TelePacific Communications to acquire MegaPath's NextWeb, Inc. subsidiary, dba Covad Wireless, a broadband fixed wireless carrier operating in California and Nevada.

Under the terms of the agreement, TelePacific Communications will gain approximately 3,500 profitable broadband fixed wireless business customers in California, Nevada and suburban Chicago through an all cash purchase of capital stock, per the press release. The footprint is complimentary so that helps.

This move just adds to the wireless moves that Tele-Pacific has made this quarter.

FCC Net Neutrality

Copps and McDowell are on opposing sides of the Net Neutrality rules, which have still not been released to the public (and probably won't be until next week).

McDowell thinks that there is competition. This from the former lawyer at COMPTEL. He knows that there isn't competition -- it's what paid his salary for 10 years at COMPTEL.

Let's Clear Up AT&T 4G

So AT&T bought more 700 MHz spectrum; this time from Qualcomm for almost $2B. This was Qualcomm's spectrum from its FloTV project that used analog TV spectrum. In 2007, AT&T skipped the FCC spectrum auction to pay $2.5B for 700 MHz spectrum from Aloha Partners. [Phonescoop has a map of the 700 spectrum.]  So AT&T is shoring up 700 MHz spectrum for its 3G and later 4G/LTE service. VZW bought spectrum in the last FCC auction in the 700 MHz sector, but it came with a stipulation for open access.

Sub-Agent Basics

I received an early morning call from the West Coast today from a woman who is a sub-agent selling Sprint mobile services. She's not having a good day. Here's a few reasons why:


  1. She isn't getting paid from her master agent.
  2. She doesn't have a contract in place with her master agent.
  3. She was unaware of charge-backs.
  4. She has no way to track commissions.
  5. She was not clear on who she could sell Sprint mobile services to.

Hence, her not getting paid.


Satellite Spectrum is Beachfront Property

Satellite sprectrum for broadband is a polarizing topic. HughesNet, WIldBlue (ViaSat), Skyway USA, StarBand and others have launched but can't hit scale. Between rain fade and line of sight issues, there is the perception that it is not as dependable as terrestrial modes of transit. But then, not every parcel of land in America has access to terrestrial broadband.

What's With Clearwire?

What's up with Clearwire? It started out as a McGraw deal with big investors: Top 5 cable companies, Sprint, Intel and Google. (Did you know that Telesphere's CEO Clark Peterson was President of Clearwire and one of Clearwire's founders?)

Clearwire has about 100 MHz of spectrum pretty much nationwide. That's a huge asset.

What Have I Been Saying?

Gary Kim writes, "A study of data submitted by 221 small U.S. telcos by Telergee Alliance confirmed trends you would expect: Broadband and wireless are growing, cable TV is flat, and voice is declining. As has been the case for several years, operating costs also are growing while profit margins are shrinking."

So if TelcoTV costs big money, but the market is flat, why spend the money?
