What if HP Became an MVNO?

October 1, 2010

All the talk about the Android versus Apple platforms has been interesting, but it leaves out the Blackberry, which actually puts out some rugged, well-liked devices. And there is a sleeper in the corner. That sleeper is HP.

September 28, 2010

Just finished recording a webinar for COMDEX-Virtual on Mobility + The Cloud = Convergence in Telecom. Khali Henderson, Editor-in-Chief of Phone+ magazine was on the panel with me. I shared this article her because it was relevant. Now I want to share it with you along with my thoughts.

Americans Agree the Internet is Working

September 23, 2010

"Hart Research Associates conducted a national survey finding that opposition to government Internet regulation remains high with more than 75 percent of respondents agreeing that the Internet is currently working well and over 55 percent stating that the federal government should not regulate the Internet at all." From Broadband for America.

A couple of things:

Sample size: 800 voters. Not much of a cross-section of "225M registered voters.

Some Unsettling Numbers

August 24, 2010

"The American economy lost 131,000 net jobs in July, about 70,000 worse than expected.  The loss of 143,000 temporary Census jobs, which was expected by economists, pushed the
"headline" number into the red."  How many jobs have the merged telecom companies dropped?

The INC 5000 list is out with 100 telecom companies on it including many Hosted VoIP companies like Callis Comm., Stage2, VoIP Logic, Telovations, Bandwidth, M5, Aptela, and Geckotech.

3 Reasons I Get a Rash from my Industry

August 23, 2010

Actually, I don't get a rash from the Industry but from a large portion of the people in my Industry.

There are so many changes happening right now - every where. Our Industry is experiencing so many factors: declining prices, hyper-competition, anti-competitive actions, forbearance, Net Neutrality, and so much more.

Agents are locked in their business model and don't want to step outside the comfort zone.

August 20, 2010

This week has been awash with mergers - the Intel-McAfee merger and the Windstream-Q-Comm merger are the big two. The third interesting merger involves two fixed wireless companies. Airband and Sparkplug announced that they merged and grabbed $20M in financing.

"Fixed-wireless companies Airband Communications and Sparkplug Communications today announced they have merged, creating the largest fixed-wireless company for businesses in the U.S., providing a full suite of voice and data services in 17 markets."

Another LTE Player?

July 27, 2010

No, not Sprint, although according to the media, Sprint is thinking about deploying LTE. I'm talking about Lightsquared.

This new LTE venture promises 100,000 jobs and a 4G network that will reach 92% of the populace. Lightsquared is a consortium based on Harbinger Capital Partners acquisition of SkyTerra Communications. "SkyTerra will provide the spectrum for this venture.

Losses All The Way Around

July 27, 2010

What a terrible quarter.

The FCC is playing around with Broadband - plans, definitions and classifications. The NTIA took the summer off from its task on the broadband stimulus.

Meanwhile, VZ releases its quarterly numbers as a loss due to pension payments and layoffs. It is planning more layoffs, because it has to cut head count in its wireline business to reflect the declining revenue. The spin was that VZW was counter-balancing any revenue losses, but with wholesale (pre-paid) cellular subs, not direct, contract ones.
