Wild Wireless Winners

May 18, 2010

I didn't know that Carlos Slim owned Tracfone. I also didn't know that it was on VZW's network.

WalMart is a large retail channel for Tracfone, joining forces in 4Q09 to offer a $30 per month no-contract plan that consists of 1000 minutes, 1000 texts and 30MB of data. This plan (and a $45 plan) were introduced under the brand Straight Talk, offered through América Móvil subsidiary Tracfone Wireless.

Mobile Bill Made Simple

May 11, 2010

The first action by the FCC Consumer Task Force is to launch an initiative to help consumers avoide "Bill Shock". [Official announcement here]

"The Bureau is seeking input on ways to alert consumers about potential high charges before they add up. One idea is a technical solution now used in Europe that could help consumers avoid this problem."

Is This The Right Move?

May 11, 2010

Sprint currently has 3 pre-paid brands: Boost Mobile, Assurance Wireless and Virgin Mobile. It's adding another that will sell pay-per-minute services. (Name to be determined).

Boost Mobile is a flat-rate all-you-can-eat plan at $50!

The FCC is Rolling

May 10, 2010

Except for Commissioner McDowell who is out after emergency gall bladder surgery, the FCC has been pumping out the info. The Broadband.gov site is pumping out info. Broadband maps, consumer speed tests, spectrum database, and the Commish's blog. (The website also highlights the 6 Goals of the National Broadband Plan.)

The Commish launched a video message on YouTube about the Third Option on the subject of Net Neutrality.

Chad Lives On

May 4, 2010

That annoying character, Chad, from the Alltel commercials lives on. (See his Facebook page here). This week Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATNI) completed its purchase of certain former Alltel wireless assets from VZW. The total purchase price was $223 million.

The VZW iPhone Rumors

May 3, 2010

I keep reading about the new iPhone coming to VZW this summer. People, check your calendars: it's still 2010. And the exclusivity contract that AT&T has with Apple for the iPhone lasts until 2011.

As an agent with AT&T burn marks on my butt, let me point out that Apple gets monthly recurring revenue from AT&T for iPhone users.

The Landline Dilemma

April 26, 2010

As CenturyTel buys up Embarq and Qwest and Windstream buys up IOC's and CLEC's, the question remains: What do you do with all that declining wireline revenue with mounting debt?

Unless 100MB DSL becomes a reality that can be rolled out to 75% of their base, I don't see how these 2 ILEC's pay back the debt.< p/>

Their FTTx strategy is in pilot status. How do they compete against DOCSIS 3.0 from the top MSO's?

2G, 3G, 4G - All Fluff

April 12, 2010

The AT&T versus Verizon Wireless ads are annoying. So is Sprint. Luckily, I never see T-Mobile ads any more. (And thankfully Alltel is no more). I've been with Sprint since 2002 or so.
