Brad Thor's Black List

September 4, 2012

I like spy novels. Since James Bond, I have been reading spy novels from Ludlum, Lustbader and Jack Higgins. The new breed of authors in this gnre are very good - Barry Eisler, Vince Flynn, Daniel Silva, Brian Haig, Randy Wayne White and David Hagberg. When I was reading Richard Clarke's novels, it was said that sometimes you get more truth in fiction than non-fiction.

Another Unpopular Decision is the Tale of the FCC

August 16, 2012

don't think the FCC has ever had a popular decision. As far as I have seen, every decision they make ends up in court. TELRIC, Brand-X (DSL and Cable access for ISP's), CBS Nipplegate, Tennis Channel versus Comcast, AT&T-T-Mobile decision, cell phone radiation (which is back in the news), USF Reform and the list just goes on.

Today, the DOJ and the FCC announced that they will approve the VZW-SpectrumCo deal.

Data Tsunami

August 8, 2012

Cisco's blog writes that we are in a data tsunami due to broadband Internet demand from consumers and their devices. Holy Hype, Batman! This is the same hype that Cisco's Global Consumer Internet Traffic Forecast started in 2009 with the Exabyte Tsunami. I get it: buy more Cisco gear.

Top 10 Risks of Telecom

July 17, 2012

Ernst & Young has a report out about the Top 10 Business Risks of the Telecommunications sector. The big one is thinking voice is still going to be the bread winner. Cellcos have gotten the memo that it will be all data all the time for profits. Top US Cablecos understand that too, I think.

The Fight Over Spectrum Dominance

July 16, 2012

It looks like the FCC is going to approve the Verizon acquisition of the SpectrumCo - cable companies alliance - spectrum. Competitors are hoping for conditions on the deal, including conditions on the marketing deal that the joint-venture is designed for.

Sprint's concern to the FCC is about equal access to cablecos for tower backhaul. I wasn't aware that the cablecos had a huge stake in the tower backhaul business.

The Sales SWAT Team

July 3, 2012

Zayo Group announced the formation of a dedicated team focused on Small Cell and Fiber to the Tower (FTT) initiative (in this press release). That's a good idea. In fact, when RAD-INFO INC is consulting on mergers between TDM companies and cloud companies, this is one approach that we have used.

There are different types of salespeople.

The Mobile Master Agent

July 2, 2012

There is a lot of chatter in the Channel about Transactional agents being replaced by VAR's and Consultative Agents. I see Master Agents having to do a similar dance real soon.

Tech Data is one of the largest VAD (value added distributors) in the world. Most VAR's have an account with TD to buy hardware.

Poll: Cellphone Features

June 13, 2012

Cellcos have a tendency to shut off features in phones that they don't appreciate. We would have more wi-fi phones now, but cellcos didn't want phones to go off-net. Now that they have mismanaged their 2G/2.5G/3G/HPSA networks, they are re-thinking that decision. (The iPhone helped).

VZW and AT&T - go figure, right?

The Answer to Flat Revenue

June 12, 2012

The markets are flat. Broadband, voice, TV and cellular. There are more cellphones activated than there are people in the US. The average home has 4 Internet enabled devices.

So what do you do if you are a Cellco and more than 60% of your revenue is wireless?
