What Are You Learning Today?

July 29, 2015

I have seen stats about how after high school and after college more than 80% of people never read another book! I find that shocking. Jim Rohn used to say that only 3% had a library card - all the learning in the world for you for the price of a trip to the library. Well, now that library is right in your house - via the InterWebs.

There Were Some Bright Spots

December 26, 2014

There were some bright spots in 2014.

Canadian and UK companies reached out for consulting in 2014. Opportunities in LATAM also peaked on the horizon. But most of the attention was right here in the USA.

The Year That Was a Mess

December 24, 2014

We have a huge Net Neutrality debate, Open Internet fights (especially between Netflix and ISPs) and peering duels (between ISPs and backbones, notice the pattern?). Why? Lack of broadband competition.

Big mergers still in play: AT&T buying DirecTV to keep up on TV; and Comcast in a three way with Charter over TWC.

A Few Channel Associations

September 15, 2014

In case you didn't know, there is an association for agents, VARs, inter-connects and MSPs to get education and certification. The TCA is the only non-profit trade association for the channel.

There are other associations for channel partners. CompTIA for IT training and certs.

Technology Channel Association Changes Taking Place

June 13, 2014

The TCA (Technology Channel Association), a non-profit trade association for channel partners that I helped found in 2008, has made a few announcements.

TCA President Jeff Ponts writes, "We have expanded our relationship with Cloud Partners, and have signed strategic relationships with CompTIA, and the Baptie Group to meet our goals." The main goal of TCA is education of the channel - all segments of the channel.

"The cornerstone of the TCA has always been the Certified Telecom Professional (CTP) exam. It was rolled out in 2010 and is now on its third revision to meet our industry's expanding role in supporting our members.

The UC Install Opprtunity

May 19, 2014

When I talk to UC provider (or Hosted VoIP providers) that sell nationally, the biggest challenge is the customer install. There are a couple of national installers including Endeavor. The feedback I hear is that the current choices are not good. just because you can spell ROUTER doesn't mean you can configure one or find one was just one anecdote.

Would You Hire That Way?

March 11, 2014

Lately, watching service providers (vendors, carriers, cloud providers - heretofore referred to as SPs) go to channel has been like watching either a reality tv show or a car crash. The way SPs approach the channel looks unplanned.

MessageBroadcast was in and out of the channel in less than a year. I don't know how you think you will get traction and sales that fast from zero.

Are Certifications Becoming Common?

Channel Programs Have Changed

November 29, 2013

Many companies are adding channel programs. Most look at the success that Microsoft and Cisco via their channels. The thing is most companies don't treat their channel the same way that these two giants did.

Microsoft knew that if people became certified they would sell, install and maintain Microsoft products.

Big Agent Win or Scam?

May 2, 2013

A couple of small ISP/CLEC companies received letters from Verizon Wholesale stating that VZ Wholesale is outsourcing their puny accounts to an agency, Alliance Wholesale Agents, LLC.

This would be huge win for any agency, since VZ waffles over the channel all the time.

However, this agency is a Dover, DE company formed in January with no website and some goofy VoIP phone numbers. It points to either a scam or VZ Wholesale, specifically Kathryn Kalajian, who signed the letter, didn't check to the agency out.
