Tidbits # 2428

IOT

Cisco buys Jasper Tech for $1.4 billion, because Jasper's IoT cards are inside GM cars, vending machines and car charging stations.

The number of IoT developers is growing exponentially - "According to VisionMobile's new IoT Megatrends 2016 report, 4.5 million developers are working on IoT applications." According to TechRepublic, these developers are buying into revenue, not hype. Well, I would beg to differ as noted by the shift away from Wearables.

Channel Partner Take-aways from CVX

January 29, 2016

Channel Vision Expo is collocated with ITEXPO. This year MSP Expo was also collocated and Microcorp's Partner learning experience was down the street. (Telarus had an event the week before and Metro Connect for carrier execs was in Miami Beach the same week. It was Telecom week in South Florida, although I didn't see Sam Levine and a few other agents I usually run into.

A Shift from CLEC

January 27, 2016

The CLECs have always been channel friendly. It was a mutual love fest because they both needed each other and were being pushed around by the ILECs. Today, the CLECs look ill. All of them are a rag tag collection of acquisitions and mangled integrations.

Sprint wireline business annual "Revenues were $581M, dropping another $18M sequentially" over the total annual revenue of $8.1 Billion.

Uh Oh, Microsoft is Closing the Gaps

January 15, 2016

Some folks think I am picking on the VoIP space (see this post). Maybe I am. Hosted PBX started for me in 2003 when Broadsoft's second customer rolled out its platform and signed me up as their first agent. It has been a struggle ever since.

The Channel Nepotism

December 9, 2015

At NextGen Cloud Expo (what is the nextgen cloud?), we were talking about all of the musical chairs in the channel programs in 2015. So many. Maybe you noticed the changes, but more likely you probably noticed the pattern.

The pattern is that a channel executive moves to a new company and he takes his cronies with him.

A Little Channel Conflict

November 24, 2015

I know this happens but I have never seen it in print. Channel Conflict is a big issue. It is basically the conflict between the direct sales team and the indirect sales team. This conflict is so bad that some programs allow for teaming - that is when the channel partner works with a direct salesperson of the carrier and they both get credit/compensated for a sale.

Everyone Wants You to be an MSP

November 5, 2015

Whether it is the keynote at a channel conference or a master agency, everywhere you look the message seems to be: Yo Agent, become a MSP!

So for a few years now, the keynotes, most notably from a Gartner analyst, have been a singular message: become a cloud broker or service provider or die!

CLECs have been trying to transition to cloud - most notably TelePacific, EarthLink and Cbeyond (now Birch). As TBI's Ken Mercer writes, "We've been selling telecom services for years.
