CLEC

Wanted Windy West Data Center

December 11, 2013

Windstream CEO Jeff Gardner stated during the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2013 Leveraged Finance conference, "We're really at a time where we can start looking out at acquisitions again to accelerate this transformation focused on the enterprise space obviously." Despite having work to do on the PAETEC integration still, Windstream will be looking for assets to add to its national enterprise system. Likely, this will be a data center on the West Coast. That could prove expensive for the following reasons: data centers are a hot commodity that a number of other CLECs are also looking at for purchase; Windstream's debt load is high and if it weren't for the stock dividend it pays out, the stock would reflect it; and their revenue profile.

Let's look at WIND revenue: 72% comes from broadband.

Channel Programs Have Changed

November 29, 2013

Many companies are adding channel programs. Most look at the success that Microsoft and Cisco via their channels. The thing is most companies don't treat their channel the same way that these two giants did.

Microsoft knew that if people became certified they would sell, install and maintain Microsoft products.

What Do the Numbers Look Like

November 11, 2013

Third quarter revenue numbers have been streaming out via press releases. Here's a look at some of them.

Windstream's 3Q2013 numbers are declining. "Overall consumer service revenues were $324 million, a decrease of 3 percent from the same period a year ago" - of which, "Consumer broadband service revenues were $119 million, a 4 percent increase year-over-year."

Big Changes Afoot at XO

November 1, 2013

Email went out yesterday to all the partners from XO Channel head, Shane

"I want to inform you that Tom Gorey, Vice President Strategic Alliances and Business Development, will be leaving XO on November 1st. Since joining XO in 2005, Tom developed new go-to-market strategies and contributed to building significant growth within the Channel at XO. Tom has been instrumental in driving the development of the foundation and programs that led to the award winning XO Business Partner Channel in place today. I would like to personally thank Tom for his contributions and wish him success in the future.

Why Agents Should Be Pro-Copper

October 11, 2013

The IIA is the perfect example of an astroturf trade group funded by and for the ILECs. The IIA put together a study to show that copper maintenance is eating up funds that could be used to deploy fiber-based broadband networks.

Fact: Windstream has penetrated 71 percent of its access lines with broadband and is making revenue from copper based broadband. In rural America, copper based broadband is still gold. Ask Fairpoint, Frontier, HT, C-Link or any rural LEC about how much revenue they make from copper in the form of POTS, T1, EoC, PRI, DSL and DS3.

AT&T's New Partner Program

September 12, 2013

Note that this is information I have heard from three different agents about AT&T's new partner program. One even attributed it to ACC Business. I have not confirmed it - nor have I seen the agreement.

There are many different types of distribution channels for AT&T - CLEC, wholesale, resale, rebill, agents, retail, brick-and-mortar and online.

More Than Just VoIP Now

August 26, 2013

The ITEXPO used to be the primary VoIP show. Today as we launch the pre-show, I notice that none of the press releases are about VoIP. Hardly any are even about UC (unified communications). There is a lot of noise around M2M.

What to Do About Dipping revenue and Profits?

August 15, 2013

These headlines are worrisome.

Weaker-Than-Expected Channel Sales Impact CenturyLink

tw telecom Revenue Grows, Profit Dips

Windstream Profit Falls 22%, Business-Service Revenue Up

Revenue is up, profit is down.

Convergence is Upon Us

August 11, 2013

For years we talked about converging voice and data. Now that most voice traffic is VoIP riding on data networks (cellular, broadband, T1, MPLS, etc.), we can say Converged. But there is another convergence happening - the world of telco and IT. CompTIA, Cloud Services Community and other groups are working hard to get VARs to either become telecom agents or work with them.

How Many VARs Are There Anyway

July 31, 2013

This is a LONG post. Kind of rambling. Sorry about that. But it does have some really good nuggets of info. Thanks for reading.
