What I Read Over the Weekend

June 23, 2014

This could have been a good case study article if it had been more specific. Instead it is full of vague assumptions. Not helpful at all.

AT&T is adding cities in NC to its U-Verse with GigaPower.

Cloud Should Transform Business

June 5, 2014

While working on a project, I keep thinking that the focus is on replacing current service - and that just doesn't make sense. Not everything that works on-premise can be jammed in the cloud and work the same. And it shouldn't.

This headline from ZDnet caught my eye: Urge to transform the business drives SaaS surge.

Things That May Interest You

April 24, 2014

There are a bunch of things that I want to comment on but just don't have the time. Yet they may be of interest to you. I did get to comment on the FCC's net neutrality ruling and the Cbeyond-Birch merger.

For one thing, I hope that the CBEY-Birch deal doesn't become the Fairpoint-VZ deal.

Agents Versus Brokerages

April 1, 2014

I often hear from carriers how Agents don't add value. I'm never sure what value the carriers are talking about. Agents are a sales force for you. We sell your stuff.

What's Driving Data Center Investment?

March 26, 2014

According to Infonetics Research, there are a number of drivers of data center investment. [see the nice chart here]

Chief among the reasons is that Enterprises need to improve application performance.

Next is improve security, especially in our highly regulated society.

Is Verizon Warring on AWS, Netflix?

February 5, 2014

A bunch of articles that were forwarded to me today -- Mashable, GigaOm, and a blog -- all about the consumer experience with FiOS, Verizon's fiber-to-the-home service, is throttled to certain destinations like AWS.

The blog post shows a chat session where a VZ tech confirms the limiting bandwidth for home users to cloud providers like AWS and Netflix. (Netflix utilizes AWS.)

I don't have FiOS.

Are CLECs Capable of Cloud Services?

January 24, 2014

Many CLECs - XO, Cbeyond, EarthLink, TelePacific and MegaPath - are in cloud services. EarthLink and Cbeyond would especially like to be known as cloud providers going forward. My question is: is it possible?

If as a CLEC you can't reliably deliver a T1, can a customer trust you with something more complex than that?

Where Is the Money in IT

January 15, 2014

Forbes has a great chart that summarizes a survey of CIOs main issues in 2014. Mainly, it is a lack of skills/staff coupled with a fixed budget to handle an expansion of business and of responsibilities. The responsibilities being foisted on the CIO include BYOD, WLAN, security, Big Data, storage, and migration to cloud.

BYOD means supporting a myriad array of devices (laptops, tablets, phones) on a number of platforms (Win7, Win8, iOS, Android, Blackberry) across time zones.

4 Moves in January

January 9, 2014

Colocation provider, FiberMedia Group, combined with Bay Area Internet Services under the new name: vXchnge. BAIC was acquired by the Stephens Group, which also owns FiberMedia.

FYI, a nice chart of the top retail colocation companies. Equinix is at about $2B of annual revenue at the top of this space and Savvis is second at approximately $1 Billion.
