Show Wrap Up: Too Much Reckless Behavior

August 17, 2016

As we wrap up the CP Evolution show in DC, my reflections have not been good. I will wrap up the show in a later post, but I need to get this off my chest. This show was an alcohol fueled bachelor party filled with scuffles, drunks, frustration and even sexual harassment.

This wasn't your fraternity reunion.

Attention is Money

August 16, 2016

At yet another channel conference, the gold is Attention. How do you get Attention.

All anyone is fighting for right now is attention. And I mean Fighting.

Look at me.

Blabbing About SD-WAN

August 3, 2016

There is a platform for public video conferencing called Up to four speakers can join a Blab on video (or just audio) to discuss a topic. Today was the second Blab that I have organized around SD-WAN. You can listen to the replay (about 44 minutes).

Nothing But Vanilla Pudding

July 29, 2016

Do you remember playing musical chairs in school? The music begins a chair is removed and you circle around until the music stops. When the music stops, you try to sit in a chair and not be left standing. Channel positions seem a lot like that right now.

Why You?

July 22, 2016

This was another Me-too week in press releases. It was ILEC SD-WAN week with announcements from AT&T, CenturyLink and Verizon. It was another handful of VoIP product launches. It was a handful of notifications that various master agencies inked agreements with UCaaS and other vendors.

What You Can Learn from the Music Industry

June 20, 2016

Watching the Uber/Lyft fight against the Hillsborough County PTC has been a front row seat to the old guard refusing to change.

The music industry died in 5 years. Blame it on Napster, but it was more about the Kingpins not wanted to change. Movies and TV are facing this, but seem to be adjusting better than the music industry did.

Follow the Money

May 4, 2016

Where is the investment money going?

Did you see that Apple had a revenue problem? Not as many iPhones are selling. "Benedict Evans (@benedictevans) says the mobile wave, which is split between mobile phones (voice/SMS) and smartphones, is coming to an end, and the next obvious market for growth is cars." Ben's blog is here and the slide deck is here.

The INCOMPAS Mission

April 13, 2016

INCOMPAS still has a mission in DC. At the east coast show in Washington, FCC Chairman Wheeler came to talk to the association and its members with a message that we still need Competition.

He says that as Charter is set to eat two cablecos to become almost as large as Comcast. After AT&T just bought DirecTV.

What Are They Feeding Enterprise?

March 9, 2016

After a 27 hour trip to Enterprise Connect, I can safely say that we have an unqualified me-too business. Video conferencing and collaboration - now called meetings and workflow - were printed on every booth. Here is what I saw.

Cisco demonstrated Spark, which I thought was for SMB, but is being pitched to Enterprise especially with its big hook into Salesforce.

Where is the Channel Going?

October 26, 2015

There have been several announcements lately about channel programs from Windstream, AT&T, InterNap, Integra and others. In a few cases, the announcements are in defense of reduction in force. In the wake of layoffs, the carriers are defending their channel position. In unison they are singing, "We still like the channel!"
