What's Up With the Data Center?

August 26, 2015

This morning there is an article that "RDG Capital Fund Management, the investment vehicle of Russell Glass and a significant shareholder of Internap, put out a public call today citing shareholder support for a sale of the company," InterNAP.

On top of that, rumors say that Verizon is shopping its data center business, formerly known as Terremark, owners and operators of the NAPs.

Windstream got a banker to shop its data center business, Hosting Solutions, which it bought in 4Q2010 for $310 Million.

Other recent deals include vXchnge buying 8 data centers from Sungard AS; and Digital Realty Trust, Inc.plunking down $1.886 Billion to private equity firms ABRY Partners and Berkshire Partners for TELx.

4 Acquisitions Noted (+2)

May 7, 2015

I missed the announcement that BAE was acquiring SilverSky. SilverSky was a combination of Perimeter Internetworking and Silver Sky that was a major cyber security and network security firm used by a number of large service providers. BAE is a large, global defense contractor.

"Metalogix, the premier provider of management software to move, manage and secure content for Office 365, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, Exchange, Box, Dropbox, Amazon, Google and other leading enterprise content management (ECM) systems, announced today that it has acquired MetaVis Technologies. MetaVis is widely known for its innovative and unified cloud collaboration service management platform." [I would have just said Microsoft Partner, but I guess that doesn't cover it.

What Happened in Vegas?

March 19, 2015

It looked like the fun days of telecom again at the CP Expo in Vegas this week. The parties were almost constant. I know Vegas is known for drinking but people were holding Bud Light bottles starting way early morning to, well, early morning.

COLOTRAQ rented out Drai's Beach Club - probably the best party at a show I have been to in a long time.

Data Center Trends with COLOTRAQ

March 4, 2015

My pal, Dany Bouchedid, is CEO of master agency, COLOTRAQ. We met during the founding of the TCA. We talk for about 7 minutes about the consolidation in the data center space and the trends for this sector of telecom.

It's funny that we picked today since there was a bit of news today.

The M&A Picks Up Steam

January 14, 2015

Well, that Hosted VoIP consolidation is slowly happening. Reinvigorated VoIP blogger, Garrett Smith, hints that Jive bought other HPBX companies (unnamed) besides "COMVOICE, based in Phoenix, AZ, and Vocalnet, based in San Francisco, CA." The the press release says "Financials were not disclosed."

Another smaller acquisition was snomOne, which became Vodia, got grabbed by a company (which I cannot name here now).

Zayo made another grab to beef up their zColo division by buying Latisys for $657 million.

What Did I Miss?

August 15, 2014

A couple of data center acquisitions happened (and some other notes). Shaw Communications, a Canadian cableco, came down to acquire the data center company, ViaWest, for about $1.2 Billion from the private equity owners. [pr]

The other move: Alpheus bought StratITsphere's retail datacenter business.

Between the NSA and the Courts, US Cloud is Dead

August 7, 2014

After all the Snowden revelations about PRISM and other programs that the NSA and other government agencies amass personal information about every person on the planet, the US Cloud Providers took a hit, especially in Europe, where the privacy laws actually have teeth.

We get that behind us (a little) just in time for a federal judge in US District Court to rule that Microsoft must comply with a US warrant for customer data despite that data being stored in a company data center in Ireland! [techrepublic]

Is this a reason for tech companies to move overseas?

Some Data Center M&A

July 7, 2014

Zayo acquired Atlanta NAP, just in time to file its S-1 with the SEC in preparation for a public offering (aka IPO). Over the years, Zayo has acquired many Atlanta based fiber assets - such as AFS and US Carrier. The addition of AtlantaNAP and its 72000 square feet of space will go nicely with its roughly 600 route miles of metro fiber. [source]
