What Did I Miss?

August 15, 2014

A couple of data center acquisitions happened (and some other notes). Shaw Communications, a Canadian cableco, came down to acquire the data center company, ViaWest, for about $1.2 Billion from the private equity owners. [pr]

The other move: Alpheus bought StratITsphere's retail datacenter business.

Between the NSA and the Courts, US Cloud is Dead

August 7, 2014

After all the Snowden revelations about PRISM and other programs that the NSA and other government agencies amass personal information about every person on the planet, the US Cloud Providers took a hit, especially in Europe, where the privacy laws actually have teeth.

We get that behind us (a little) just in time for a federal judge in US District Court to rule that Microsoft must comply with a US warrant for customer data despite that data being stored in a company data center in Ireland! [techrepublic]

Is this a reason for tech companies to move overseas?

Some Data Center M&A

July 7, 2014

Zayo acquired Atlanta NAP, just in time to file its S-1 with the SEC in preparation for a public offering (aka IPO). Over the years, Zayo has acquired many Atlanta based fiber assets - such as AFS and US Carrier. The addition of AtlantaNAP and its 72000 square feet of space will go nicely with its roughly 600 route miles of metro fiber. [source]

Telx Says They Love the Channel

March 5, 2014

Allen Harmsen, Director of Product Marketing at TELX, spoke with me about the channel strategy at TELX. To clear up the rumors from last week, Harmsen and Mary Fahey explained that Telx was actually still very channel-centric and that no agents had been cut from the program.

At a sales kick-off meeting in Jacksonville in January, the sales team was told that the channel was going to be leaning less on direct sales personnel and more on the channel people, including two newly added channel managers (in the Northwest and NYC). The five channel managers would be responsible for channel sales, not the direct reps, who would focus on Enterprise sales for the 20 data centers in 13 markets as Telx launches its nationwide marketing campaign.

Peak10 For Sale

January 24, 2014

WSJ is reporting that data center company, Peak10, has put itself up for sale. I guess the investors want there money now - and aren't shy about saying so. Even though thre was a "$215 million dividend to its owners, according to Moody's Investors Service" in 2012. The owners include investment firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, which owns 80%.

Where Is the Money in IT

January 15, 2014

Forbes has a great chart that summarizes a survey of CIOs main issues in 2014. Mainly, it is a lack of skills/staff coupled with a fixed budget to handle an expansion of business and of responsibilities. The responsibilities being foisted on the CIO include BYOD, WLAN, security, Big Data, storage, and migration to cloud.

BYOD means supporting a myriad array of devices (laptops, tablets, phones) on a number of platforms (Win7, Win8, iOS, Android, Blackberry) across time zones.

4 Moves in January

January 9, 2014

Colocation provider, FiberMedia Group, combined with Bay Area Internet Services under the new name: vXchnge. BAIC was acquired by the Stephens Group, which also owns FiberMedia.

FYI, a nice chart of the top retail colocation companies. Equinix is at about $2B of annual revenue at the top of this space and Savvis is second at approximately $1 Billion.

The CLEC Cloud Cover

December 30, 2013

Windstream, TDS, EarthLink and Cbeyond made a strategic decision to go cloud a couple of years ago. Acquisitions followed. It seems to be paying off.

CLEC's have a special access circuit problem.
