FCC and Broadband Growth

November 1, 2010

Trending on my twitter stream is Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) President Karen Kerrigan's op-ed in the Washington Post about net neutrality and the FCC's proposal to impose Internet "reclassification." Basically, she states: FCC Regulations Would Smother Growing Broadband Sector.

There is nothing I like better than FUD.

Not for nothing but the RBOC's have almost given up on DSL anyway.

FCC Chair Makes Key Points

October 21, 2010

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski spoke at the FCC Spectrum Summit making some key points, I think.

"We hold this summit at a critical time. Our economy is struggling. People are hurting.

What Have I Been Saying?

October 17, 2010

Gary Kim writes, "A study of data submitted by 221 small U.S. telcos by Telergee Alliance confirmed trends you would expect: Broadband and wireless are growing, cable TV is flat, and voice is declining. As has been the case for several years, operating costs also are growing while profit margins are shrinking."

So if TelcoTV costs big money, but the market is flat, why spend the money?

ROA and Moore

October 11, 2010

A new metric for Wall Street is Return on Assets. A company spends money on infrastructure, equipment, etc. (Assets) to produce goods or deliver service. Recently, I have been reading where the return on assets is decreasing sharply (and has been for some time).

Wasted Ad Dollars

October 11, 2010

So we have television ads running constantly from auto insurance carriers. State Farm, GIECO and Progressive are running massive ad campaigns that I have seen on TV shows, the NFL, web, and direct mail.

It's basically become too annoying. How can they all be cheapest?

So We Have These Mergers

September 22, 2010

So we have all these mergers taking place, then I'm reading Consulting magazine to find a book review about John Hagel's The Power of Pull. We are in an era of declining ROA from Big Business, so they have to keep buying assets to stave it off.

"to support that proposition we muster a set of evidence around performance trends over long periods of time for all public companies in the United States. In particular, we show that return on assets (ROA) for all public companies in the U.S. has eroded in a very substantial and sustained rate since 1965.

Paetec acquiring Cavalier

September 13, 2010

PAETEC announced that it is merging with Cavalier Telephone this morning. The transaction is worth about $796M if I read between the lines correctly - $336M in debt and $460M in financing. So PAETEC gets about $800M in additional revenue for $796M.

CavTel will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of PAETEC.

The Era of Freelancers

September 7, 2010

Locally, I help organize BarCamp Tampa Bay, the UN-Conference for creatives, geeks, and techies. We gather for 2 days to share, engage, learn and network. We have had over 60 sessions both years. There will be more this year.

My Negative Outlook

August 26, 2010

It has been pointed out that I tend to have a negative outlook. I don't know how fair that statement is but I'll give you my view of the world.

I'm an American. This is the greatest country in the world.

Debt and Finances

August 16, 2010

I'll readily admit that I am not a financial wizard. I am risk adverse and think that playing the stock market is like a casino (the deck is stacked against you). Then I read The Big Short by Michael Lewis and I was amazed that most of the Players on The Street don't know more than me, except they know when the rats are bailing a ship, so they can too.

That being said, I wonder how we have developed such an over leveraged Industry.
