Notes from Connections 2014

October 13, 2014

Broadsoft Connections kicked off with the usual festivities yesterday including a pool party and a summer fashion show. This morning it was all business as the attendees were treated to presentations (including one by ANPI's David Byrd pictured), which produced some interesting data.

Only 3 percent of business lines are Hosted PBX. <-- That means two things: lots of potential and the sales teams suck at selling HPBX.

The Expo News Update

September 9, 2014

Datapipe, a global managed IT provider, acquired Layered Tech to add to its US federal government business. Layered Tech adds security and compliance to Datapipe's managed cloud service. It is not unusual to pick off a specialty shop since developing the service and hiring the talent is an uphill battle today.

tw telecom says that the new CIO of the combined Level3/twt will be twt's own Harold Teets.

What Did I Miss?

A couple of data center acquisitions happened (and some other notes). Shaw Communications, a Canadian cableco, came down to acquire the data center company, ViaWest, for about $1.2 Billion from the private equity owners. [pr]

The other move: Alpheus bought StratITsphere's retail datacenter business.

Access is Still Pretty Good

At all the shows, it is cloud this and cloud that - a bunch of doom and gloom on legacy telecom. I am calling bullsh!t to that right now.

The LD business is still making money (especially in Canada). The dial-up business is still propping up our friends at EarthLink and their rivals at NetZero and AOL.

The Whirl Factor

There was a good blog post on the TDCloud blog titled, "What's Your "Whirl Factor?" It was a good read.

"If the industry as a whole knew how awesome your product was--if they really understood all the differentiating features and the benefits of using it--would they still get behind it? Would sales people actively sell it? Would customers be lining up to buy it?"

Telesphere Goes Reality TV in Booth

A few posts this month from trade shows where I just wanted to point out some unusual marketing, like TelePacific having pop-a-shot basketball games in their booth. Swoosh!

Telesphere and BroadSoft are unveiling a massive 8-foot-tall, 3,200 pound aquarium developed by the creative team of Acrylic Tank Manufacturing from Animal Planet's hit show, "Tanked." Representatives of Telesphere tooke part in filming an episode of "Tanked" that will air on the Animal Planet Network in April. So telecom hits reality TV.
