It's the Content Stupid!

January 20, 2011

At a networking event on Monday night in Tampa, I ran into an SEO guy, who proceeded to explain that Google search results (SERPs) would be all paid soon. He didn't know the difference between an SEO strategy and managing a PPC (pay-per-click) campaign. (The Cranky Bastards discuss this on this week's podcast - and I will be discussing SEO and Lead Gen with TMC's Anthony Graffeo Friday).

I tried to explain that organic SEO will always work - meaning content like crack will beat any paid campaign.

Get Your Net-Head On

January 11, 2011

So at CVX @ITEXPO on Thursday, Feb. 3rd at 3:15 PM I will be presenting about the need for Net-Heads in the Channel again. (It was originally presented at CVX at ITEXPO East in LA in October of 2010.) The session is titled, "Crossing the Channel Chasm". Please come listen.

So you have some background on the Net-Head concept of mine, download this free e-book that collects all of my writings on this TMC blog and in Internet Telephony magazine in one quick, short read.

ITEXPO East 2011

January 4, 2011

ITEXPO East 2011 in Miami Beach is less than a month away. Who's going?

Suzanne Bowen of DIDX is listing the events on her blog here.

Highlights include the Telecom One-on-One put on by PR firm JS&A for clients, media and friends on Feb. 1; Women of VoIP Breakfast and Networking Receptions on Feb. 2nd & 3rd.

Net-heads Grab the Gold Ring

January 3, 2011

Over on Voyces Larry Lisser blogs about 4 communications startups that received funding in 4Q2010.  (Pertinent because Communications Startup Camp is in less than a month on Feb. 3 at ITEXPO!) What made the story stand out for me is that all the innovation in communications is coming from Net-Heads not Bell-Heads. Software developers are shipping great Art.

Verizon coming up with another stupid slogan or the ability for a largely technophobic consumer to watch the same movie on 3 devices is not a great advance.  I'll give them some credit for the social networks widgets, but again not easy for the general public to pull off.

Meanwhile Net-heads are making mashups; designing friendly UI; and allowing the small business to take full advantage of the web/apps/cloud.

For example, Tampa local's Charles Armstrong launched the iPhone app Tour Wrist in 2010 at TEDX Tampa Bay

If Only the Presenters Improved

November 10, 2010

I organize a few events. I present at a few conferences. And I attend about 15 each year. I rarely sit through a whole presentation. Why?

Top 3 Ways Not To Interact with a Blogger

October 21, 2010

I get email from public relations firms all the time. Every time I think I'm off a list, I get added to a new one. I already get a steady stream of email from clients, vendors, peers and friends in the Industry. (Keep those tips coming!) Add in social media noise and most of my day is fielding news, questions, etc.

Net-Heads Versus Bell-Heads

October 6, 2010

So I gave my talk today about Net-Heads versus Bell-heads at CVX (Channel Vision Expo). There is a shift happening in the telecom world. Not only is the world of IT and the world of Telecom blending, but technology is becoming even more pervasive in the business world. More technology means more problems and much more support is needed.

This Week at ITEXPO

October 6, 2010

I have been busy at ITEXPO so have not blogged this week. There are lots of familiar faces that I only get to see at ITEXPO East and West.

There has been a lot of content at ITEXPO: at least 13 sessions going on at any given time. 4G, SmartGrid, ChannelVision Expo, MSP World, Social CRM, and more, including the usual ITEXPO tracks. A lot to take in.

Bundling for Stickiness

September 10, 2010

Last year at Broadsoft Connections I did a panel on Bundling. Not many VoIP Providers bundle. Sure they offer Internet Access but that's mainly for QOS. What do they offer that makes them STAND OUT?

First up, HOW TO: 10 Tips on Presenting at Conferences. Let me summarize: PowerPoint is NOT to be read to the audience and remember the 10-20-30 Rule by Guy Kawasaki (video)!

There's a rather long slide show on slideshare called Steal This Presentation.
