FCC

Tidbits of Telecom and Other News

October 13, 2014

Makes you think, right? It also makes me think that regulations hold back some innovation. AirBnB, Uber and Tesla Motors challenge long-standing regulations. But really what holds it all back is the power (industry) behind said regulations - like Big Oil, Big Pharma, the Duopoly.

FCC Chair Wheeler Missed a Point

October 8, 2014

At Comptel, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler was the keynote speaker. Competition is the FCC model, he stated. Really? Since when?

Do you think we have adequate competition in anything but cellular?

Many Moves

July 15, 2014

Softbank is ready to announce that it is merging with T-Mobile. It seems that Softbank CEO, which owns most of Sprint, went around the FCC by buying the German parent company. CP is reporting that "SoftBank, Sprint's majority owner, has reportedly reached a "basic agreement" to buy T-Mobile USA's counterpart, Deutsche Telekom."

Integra made its second purchase in 2014 by grabbing WCI.

Telecom Transitions in Rural America

May 15, 2014

I notice that with the changes to the USF program (transition from paying for voice lines to broadband); the end of broadband stimulus dollars; the end of inter-carrier compensation; and the TDM-to-IP transition the IOC (independent telephone companies) community is in a huge state of flux. It's federal funding is dwindling while it has to make big shifts in tech and business models.

VARs, VADs, inter-connects, CLECs, even Agents have been in turmoil as business models have had to morph. The entire telecom ecosystem is shifting.

The Net Neutrality Debacle

May 7, 2014

Many people have asked me about this. I don't have a rant about the FCC's Net Neutrality decision. We got screwed but I can't get worked up about it because that is what I expect to happen in DC these days.

No matter what ruling - McCutcheon v.

Speculations in the Hallway

February 27, 2014

A bunch of speculations running rampant through the expo hallways.

Will the FCC approve the Comcast-TWC merger? Two items. One, after Comcast forced Netflix to pay for transit, how does that affect how the FCC views Comcast and Net Neutrality?

Net Neutrality Loses

January 14, 2014

As expected Verizon won, "the DC circuit, in which the appeals court struck down the FCC's net neutrality rules because the the FCC had no mandate under the rules it used to issue that ruling." TechDirt has a good look at how both sides - carriers and net neutrality.

In 2005, with the Brand-X case and the FCC, this ruling was written. "Given that the Commission has chosen to classify broadband providers in a manner that exempts them from treatment as common carriers, the Communications Act expressly prohibits the Commission from nonetheless regulating them as such. Because the Commission has failed to establish that the anti-discrimination and anti-blocking rules do not impose per se common carrier obligations, we vacate those portions of the Open Internet Order." Lots Going On

December 19, 2013

Apparently, all will be better when we switch from QAM to WAM

DISH hasn't given up on wireless. It has done terrestrial LTE trials with nTelos. DISH is still looking to buy LightSquared or T-Mobile.

Re-Vamping Telecom

December 6, 2013

The FCC has already made some moves to revamp telecom. There was USF reform, funding for broadband, elimination of a lot of regulations, pilot test with Vonage on direct DID access and the TDM-to-IP migration.

The Broadband money (NTIA, BIP, BTOP) as well as the Lifeline (Obama phone) program has seen its share of abuses, but billion dollar programs will do that. The FCC needs to tighten that up.

Short Week Musings

November 26, 2013

Thanksgiving and Hanukkah this week mixed with winter weather in many parts of the US has made for a slow week, but a busy travel week. Soon, thanks to the new FCC Chair Wheeler, that passenger barely squeezed into the ever shrinking airline seat next you will soon be able to use his cell phone on the flight - further annoying already annoyed people.

Blackberry has a new CEO, John Chen, who is making $88 million to sell them off, because if his tenure at Sybase is any indication, he isn't a turn around exec.

After 34 years as chairman of Level3, Walter Scott is retiring.
