Windstream joins the likes of TelePacific, the old Airband (now UNSi) and numerous WISPs in offering Fixed Wireless. "Windstream's Fixed Wireless is a technology solution for carrier-grade Ethernet and Internet-over-Ethernet connectivity delivered by digital microwave technology, and is currently offered in Chicago, Ill., New York, N.Y., Northern New Jersey, N.J., and Milwaukee, Wis." Windstream is in battle at the FCC to get IP equivalent wholesale products from AT&T as TDM retires. It is not going well.

Why Be Cagey?

"On EarthLink's Q4 earnings call this morning, the company talked pretty frankly about its intentions to sell off network assets to focus more tightly on the managed services side," reports Telecom Ramblings. So I contact them about a specific territory. I get a soft shoe tap dance.

M&A Rumor Mill

One big rumor is that Salesforce is being acquired. Google, Microsoft and even Oracle have all been mentioned. Although Oracle has said they will profit more if someone else buys Salesforce.

By the way, just the rumor made a lot of folks at Salesforce extra money as the stock bumped up 10% on the rumor.

News Tidbits Part 2917

Windstream's telecommunications network assets were spun off into a REIT named Communications Sales and Leasing, Inc. that is trading on Nasdaq as symbol CSAL today.

Comcast removed itself from the $45B acquisition of TWC. Both the DOJ and the FCC were opposed to it. Comcast is facing other issues, like cord-cutting and the demise of the pay-cable-TV model that it was built on.

The Race to Gigabit is About Business

The cable companies racing to Gigabit networks isn't about delivering ultra-fast broadband to consumers. The Gigabit announcements get them good PR in DC, where the largest MSOs are waiting for approval for acquisitions (Comcast for TWC; Charter for Bright House). Comcast, as the largest MSO, has a poor reputation for customer service and for Net Neutrality. The Comcast-Verizon squeeze on Netflix was probably the number 1 reason the FCC received millions of public comments and laid down the law.

Cable Will Win

The Telecompetitor spends a lot of space on Chattanooga's muni network - as if it was the perfect model for a Gigabit network. Two problems with it: (1) it cost taxpayers literally millions of dollars via bonds and federal grants and (2) very few people buy Gigabit services from them. It is rare that a muni network will do well. UTOPIA, Wilson's Greenlight, a couple in Florida, ECB-Chatt and Lafayette's LUS are the ones I paid attention to over the years.

Do Network Upgrades Matter

AT&T is upgrading some U-Verse areas to 75 Mbps. Is this in response to the new FCC definition of broadband?

Indiana Fiber Network is upgrading to 100G. IFN is owned by 20 LECs in the state that put 3500 route miles of fiber in the ground touching about 4000 buildings.

The IP Transformation Effect

While the former RBOCs run pilots for the TDM-to-IP transformation that they are pushing for, the rest of the ILEC world is scrambling to figure out how it will destroy their current business model. The Rural LECs have been kept afloat by USF funds; now, those funds will be less than half and based on broadband lines instead of POTS. The whole business model is shaking up.

Voice over IP is the aftermath of consumers moving from copper to FiOS or cable modem or even cell phone over the last ten years.

The Customer is Always Right

Seth Godin reminded me this morning that the customer is always right - or he won't be a customer for long.

This comes at a good time, because a recent conference call about latency on a Layer 2 private line had me biting my cheek. With the industry average SLA being 44 ms of latency on a private line, anything in the single digits is considered excellent connectivity.

Every device - switch or router - adds a little latency.

C Spire Nabs Alabama UC Player

C Spire, formerly Cellular South, has announced the acquisition of Callis Communications from Mobile Alabama. Callis Comm is a Broadsoft based unified communications provider who recently expanded as a facilities-based CLEC in the greater Mobile region.

C Spire is the nation's largest privately held wireless communications company, is based in Ridgeland, Mississippi and employs nearly 1,200. C Spire Wireless is owned by the holding company Telapex, Inc., which also owns Telepak Networks, a fiber provider in that region.
