Ethernet is Spreading

July 18, 2011

So many notices this week about Ethernet. It's the preferred protocol for most businesses. (No one wants to buy a DS3 card and configure it, I guess). Ethernet is becoming more and more available as the delivery protocol for Internet bandwidth, MPLS, IP/VPN, and Private Line.

Tele-Pacific Buys into Hosted

May 6, 2011

Tele-Pacific is buying its way into Hosted PBX with its acquisition of Telekenex. TelePacific will gain approximately 1,000 business customers and 122 employees along with the hosted PBX platform. Tele-Pacific will run Telekenex as a separate channel, which is a good thing.

This is a good move for Tele-Pacific as it continues to dominate its region with more services plus another data center.

The Number from Above(Net)

March 16, 2011

Here is AboveNet CEO Bill LaPerch presenting the business numbers to the channel partners at their private event at the CP Expo in Vegas this week. AboveNet has some interesting numbers:

2400 lit buildings including 450 data centers

1400 customers, most of whom are not wholesale.

My EarthLink Strategy

March 4, 2011

When I analyze the four CLEC components of the new EarthLink Business, I wonder what Atlanta will do with it.

Deltacom had a huge fiber network (IFN) that essentially went under-utilized. In my experience, many employees did not know about IFN. Assets like lit buildings, collocations, colo gear, and the fiber maps are crucial to revenue generation from those hard cost assets.

Two More Acquisitions

February 9, 2011

According to a letter to PAETEC employees, "Earlier today, we announced plans to acquire XETA Technologies, Inc. which will dramatically expand our capabilities to serve customers with unique, equipment-based solutions nationwide. XETA is very similar to Quagga (or what we used to call PAETEC ISG), providing innovative solutions to enterprise customers while delivering exceptional customer service."

PAETEC is using this $61M acquisition to boost its Managed Services business to the enterprise space. But at the same time they are worrying the Channel.

Verizon Changes Commissions

January 31, 2011

Shockingly, Verizon has dramatically changed their commission structure for 2011.

The changes are effective for all orders issued into Verizon's legacy system after 1/1/2011.

Commissions have moved from a Residual and Acquisition structure, to an all Acquisition (up-front) structure.

Commissions for all products will be capped, being paid as if they were 1-year-term deals.

The Future of Bell DSL

January 27, 2011

AT&T announced that they "nearly" hit 3 million U-Verse TV customers. In comparison, Bell added 2.8M new wireless customers in the 4th quarter and sold 4.1 million iPhones. Bell has 95M wireless subscribers. [see PDF].

Did EarthLink Goof on Branding?

December 14, 2010

Yesterday when I was speaking to a client, I mentioned that new Edge Networks merged with Deltacom to become EarthLink Business. The confused look on his face was not unexpected. Again this morning when discussing the new name, EarthLink is linked to consumer dial-up in the marketplace. How does that translate into a B2B Brand?

3 New Acquisitions

December 14, 2010

PAETEC subsidiary Paetec Software Corporation, bought Formula Telecom Solutions Inc. for $13 million in cash, according to this release. PAETEC is just buying the billing platform it has used for over ten years. Makes sense. And $13M for a BSS system is nothing.

Accolades

December 13, 2010

Since some folks think I don't post any positive stuff, today's post is filled with accolades. Here are some companies that deserve a gold star.

For the sixth consecutive year VoIP Supply has been named one of the Top 100 Private Companies in Western New York. [@GarrettSmith]

Junction Network's just signed their 10,000th customer.
