Open Note to the Hosted PBX Crowd

February 27, 2014

I was asked yesterday why I don't like Alteva, by someone who just went to work there. I don't like or dislike Alteva or 8x8 or any other Hosted PBX company. Alteva is public - like 8x8, RC, CBEY and a few others - so I get to look at the numbers they post quarterly. It's a measuring stick.

Ring Central and J2 are Popping

February 10, 2014

Ring Central saw a bump in the stock price in Wall Street's response to RC's earnings report. Quarterly revenue increased 37% year-over-year to $45.3 million. Total revenue was $160.5 million for the full year of 2013, up 40% from the full year of 2012.

CEO Vlad Schmunis announced that "TELUS, a leading national telecommunications company in Canada, has selected RingCentral's cloud-based services to deliver advanced communication solutions for its business customers." RC has a similar deal with AT&T.

Does Broadsoft Have a Problem?

February 3, 2014

M5 Networks before being purchased by ShoreTel migrated from a Broadsoft platform (M6) to its own software. Sure, they had to hire 100 developers to replace the Broadsoft but still.

The biggest noise out of the Cloud Comm Alliance is that the licensing fees for the platform are like paying vigorish to a loanshark. RingCentral execs used that vig as a reason that some CCA members should migrate to the RC platform instead.

ITEXPO Update

January 30, 2014

In Miami Beach, at ITEXPO, Dr. Satwant Kaur's keynote this morning centered on how technology, especially nanotech, is transforming healthcare. Robotics, sperm and magnets combine to improve conception. I wonder what that procedure is like (and how much it costs).

Nextiva hired Ira Feuerstein to run its channel.

It's Good to Know Your VoIP Numbers

January 20, 2014

8x8 and RingCentral presented at the Needham conference last week. 8x8 has its investor prezo available for a look see (HERE). I wish RC and others did. Not just so I could examine the numbers in order to rank the Hosted VoIP/UC players but to get a detailed view of the industry after ten years of slogging VoIP.

Telecom Tidbits Part 133

January 16, 2014

Master Agency Telephony Partners has re-branded as Acuity Technologies. Why the re-brand? More than just the shift to cloud, the industry will be just one - IT and telecom - "a comprehensive technology infrastructure company that can provide solutions covering the entire spectrum of technology." That's what Acuity CEO Josh Anderson is delivering and the name change is just a way to showcase that.

Panterra Networks will be unveiling a new data storage service at ITEXPO.

Don't Be Lazy in VoIP Sales

January 15, 2014

Things must be tough over at RC, because I received an email from an RC account exec titled, "Looking for best contact". The copy was "I am doing some research on your company to determine if there is any interest in a cloud business phone system. Your business will benefit from more control, more features and 50-70% lower telecommunications costs." There's a few things wrong here.

One: spamming just pisses me off.

WCS Buys Alteva Subsidiary

January 8, 2014

From an email from WCS (Wholesale Carrier Services, Inc.) today. "WCS announced that it acquired substantially all the assets and infrastructure of USADatanet, a subsidiary of Alteva Communications, Inc. in all-cash transaction. This key addition to WCS' network and engineering/IT assets marks a major milestone in WCS' strategic evolution to a true next-generation global facilities-based carrier that delivers converged voice and data communications services through a patented software-as-a-service supply chain platform."

This statement confuses me: "The acquisition brings new capabilities to WCS including state-of-the-art hosted PBX/IP Centrex platform and full ACS/call enter functionality; integrated audio conferencing bridge and voice platform with an integrated T.38 IP Fax platform.

C Spire Nabs Alabama UC Player

December 11, 2013

C Spire, formerly Cellular South, has announced the acquisition of Callis Communications from Mobile Alabama. Callis Comm is a Broadsoft based unified communications provider who recently expanded as a facilities-based CLEC in the greater Mobile region.

C Spire is the nation's largest privately held wireless communications company, is based in Ridgeland, Mississippi and employs nearly 1,200. C Spire Wireless is owned by the holding company Telapex, Inc., which also owns Telepak Networks, a fiber provider in that region.

UC Growth is Stagnant

November 6, 2013

The case for UC: "The communications requirements of most businesses now extend well beyond telephony. They embrace email, instant messaging, voicemail, video conferencing and 'presence'. Ideally every one is integrated with the others to create a suite of unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) tools." Ideally - but not in reality. Hence, the big problem - and why UC growth isn't what it should be.
