Why Network Matters

October 15, 2013

High speed broadband, DSL, cable modems, Gigabit, fiber to the home, metro Ethernet, DS3 and T1, even LTG and 4G are just network transport. Yet that is all the advertising is about, right? Why?

Because the most important thing today is access to the network.

The Strain on Linear TV

September 23, 2013

Earlier this year TWC and CBS were in battle over content carriage contracts. It caused blackouts of CBS channels for a while. In 2012, there were 91 blackouts in the US. Congress isn't too happy that the masses are missing prime time because then they just complain about Congress.

2 Week 19 Thoughts

September 12, 2013

As I head home (thanks Gogo Internet) from week 19 of travel this year, I was reviewing one of my moleskin notebooks because I scribble a lot of notes (and then forget to write them up - or just don't have time.)

"Access to broadband Internet is systematically necessary for the foundation of economics."

I think that was a TEDx Manchester Village quote, although it sounds like something Seth Godin would say also. The US Government hasn't come to grips with the fact that the new economy revolves around and on the Internet.

Moving Away from the PSTN

September 9, 2013

AT&T's spokesman, the Internet Innovation Alliance co-chair, Jamal Simmons, has an op-ed piece about moving away from the old telephone network to bring about awesomeness.

He describes trials that AT&T would like to do about the transition from the PSTN to the all-IP network and compares it to the DTV trials in Wilmington NC. He makes a good case.

Except the Internet Innovation Alliance is an astroturf group for AT&T.

Verizon Fights FCC for Editorial Control of Internet

September 9, 2013

Thanks to recent revelations, we know that Verizon, AT&T and others are feeding the NSA with all our emails, call records, Internet search history, etc. In the wake of this privacy nightmare, Verizon is in court fighting the FCC over more than just Net Neutrality.

Does the FCC have authority to enforce Net Neutrality rules? A court already ruled yes.

The Snowden Effect (on Business)

August 9, 2013

TechCrunch has two articles about two email hosting providers who have shut down their business. Lavabit was the email service for Snowden, the NSA whistleblower. After government intervention, the owner shut down.

The owner left this note:

This experience has taught me one very important lesson: without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would _strongly_ recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.

Silent Circle shut down their email operations because they didn't want to deal with the USG (3 letters that represent all the 3 letter agencies in the US).

Will the NSA Hurt US Cloud Revenue?

June 10, 2013

The whistleblower / traitor was revealed in the NSA scandal: Edward Snowden. I have been reading a lot about this whole situation.

Apparently, this story was broken last year, but no one paid attention. "William Binney, a 32-year veteran of the secretive agency, and one of the best codebreakers in NSA history" was interviewed by the NY Times.

The NSA Spying Scandal isn't New

June 7, 2013

Remember back in 2003 when a whistleblower from AT&T pointed out Room 641A that the NSA used to spy on all AT&T long distance calls and Internet traffic? Verizon and Qwest denied they did, too.

Put on your foil hat because I am going to make some crazy points.

The FCC only wants to deal with a few companies, not thousands of them.

The First Woman Chair at the FCC

May 22, 2013

I don't know much about Mignon Clyburn, except that she is the first acting chairwoman of the FCC. Congrats!

She will be acting chair until Congress approves the appointment of Wheeler to the Chair. Considering some federal judges are waiting 700 days now for appointment, who knows how long this will take.
