12 Things to Do at the End of the Year

December 13, 2010

Big Challenge Selling Hosted PBX

November 9, 2010

On LinkedIn (in the Hosted PBX group), the question was asked, "What's the biggest challenge you face selling your solution to end users and/or channel partners?" Here are some of the answers.

Can the end user trust the service delivery of the provider? This is a big question because there have been some failures in VoIP delivery over the years. VoIP has taken somewhat of a reputation hit.

Promiscuous Networking

September 22, 2010

While this whole social media thing is new and yet evolving, experts have emerged. Ninjas even. All these folks that lay a claim to knowing everything there is to know about social media. It was the same with multi-level marketing (MLM) aka network marketing.

5 Prospecting Ideas

July 16, 2010

Steve Cadley, the Salesologist from Cadley Consulting, and I discuss 5 prospecting ideas for businesses. The first key step is to define who your target is. It might be beneficial to make a list of the top 50 companies that you would like to be your customer.

Next, clarify the value that your service will bring to that prospect. That value should be tied into the target market.

Performing these two steps helps you disqualify prospects and to create a laser beam of an elevator pitch.

Then you are ready to use the 5 tips for prospecting: LinkedIn, social networks search, Google Alerts, Classified Ads, and the old fashioned door knocking and cold calling.

Remember that people buy from people and they buy emotively.

Do some research on your prospects to be better informed.

Should You Blog?

July 14, 2010

A colleague asked me this morning about blogging. Here is some basic info.

  1. How does this tie to my website? Is it a separate domain or just a page on my site?

How Much is Too Much?

June 21, 2010

I was invited into yet another LinkedIn group today. This time from Telarus. Why? There are groups from Phone+ (Channel Partner Network), ChannelVision Magazine, Independent Telecom Consultants, Peer-to-Peer, Telecom Business Daily, Telecom Executives Business Network, Telecom Sales Pros, Telecommunications Professionals Network, and the Technology Channel Association.

A couple of months ago, a TCA Board member started Channel Update, kind of in direct conflict with what we were doing at TCA.

How Do They Avoid Being Just the Dumb Pipe

February 11, 2010

On LinkedIn there was a question in the Telecom Executives Business Network group: "How can a Telco Service Provider value chain defend itself from the attack by the emerging "Cloud" services? My understanding is that the emerging "cloud" services remove value-add and differentiation from the Telco service providers which are cornered to act just as the bit-stream providers (especially for the retail market)."

My answer to that was as follows:

Most telco carriers worry about becoming a Dumb Pipe. Isenberg told them this would happen.

How to Leverage Social Media for a Marketing Campaign

January 20, 2010

At TMC's ITEXPO, I moderated a panel after lunch titled How to Leverage Social Media for a Successful Marketing Campaign. Both panelists - Isaac Hazard, Director of Strategic Consulting, Mzinga; and Suzanne Bowen, VP Marketing & Business Development, Super Technologies, Inc. & DIDX - delivered case studies.

What was the goal?
How was it executed?
What was the results/metrics/ROI?

How to Think about Social Media

You need to think about social media platforms as additional tools for the marketing toolbox.

Applying Gary Vee

January 7, 2010

Last night I got to listen to Gary Vaynerchuk speaking about Crush It (Amazon affilaite link), his new book. He talked about branding your business via online marketing, which is what has made him famous (via video blogging about wine on Wine Library TV). [You can see a 15 minute talk of his on YouTube].

His primary thought is that Content is King. So if you run a company and your company isn't blogging, shame on you.

Social Media is Like Dating

August 4, 2009

Last night was the WITI Tampa meeting with two social media experts - IBM's VP Sandy Carter and Tampa Bay's own Shawna Vercher.

Sandy walked the audience through some social media lessons, including some homework on your Brand 2.0: Post 2 presentations to SlideShare; join LinkedIn and Facebook and connect with 50 people; and join twitter and tweet. Your brand is about experience, connection, promise and interaction. Social media helps you to give your audience (or marketplace) that. It can't replace face-to-face, but, as Shawna put it, it's a nice placeholder for you until you see them again. It's a way to stay top of mind. It's all about what you want your brand to be - offline and online.

Other ways to utilize social networks to boost your brand are becoming an expert on LinkedIn Answers; creating how-to videos on YouTube; and increasing your search engine results with tagged video and photos (especially with a Flickr account).
