TelePacific Rolling Out SD-WAN

April 18, 2016

In this fourteen minute podcast with TelePacific's SVP of Marketing, Dave Zahn, talks with me about SD-WAN and how TelePacific is rolling it out. SD-WAN isn't a product. The deployment of SD-WAN by a carrier allows for service offerings around service delivery and managed services.

As SAAS and OTT (over-the-top) VoIP and video become ubiquitous in today's business environment, quality of service will become an issue.

Can You Say More M&A?

April 7, 2016

I think I left off with this week with CenturyLink buying NetAura. There's more.

Have not heard this brand in a while: BROCADE. Where have they been? I guess they needed to make some noise, so they are buying Ruckus Wireless for $1.2 Billion.

The Monitoring Master Move

November 20, 2015

This week marks the second master agency that has decided to get into monitoring. It seems like a bold move to go from back office sales support to resemble a NOC (network operations center).

In the case of Telarus, they bought the company and are pushing it out to their partners. Telarus has some IT skills in the software space - building and running GeoQuote.

Everyone Wants You to be an MSP

November 5, 2015

Whether it is the keynote at a channel conference or a master agency, everywhere you look the message seems to be: Yo Agent, become a MSP!

So for a few years now, the keynotes, most notably from a Gartner analyst, have been a singular message: become a cloud broker or service provider or die!

CLECs have been trying to transition to cloud - most notably TelePacific, EarthLink and Cbeyond (now Birch). As TBI's Ken Mercer writes, "We've been selling telecom services for years.

News Tidbits Part 2920

October 15, 2015

Alan Percy at Dialogic has a nice write up of our panel about Open Source for service providers from ITEXPO. The panel discussion with Dialogic, XO and Netsapiens was so good that I am sorry it was not recorded. Read it here and at the end of the post sign up for the study data.

Fiber to the Tower is still driving growth for RLECs. Fairpoint is even seeing a need to start a construction division.

The Show Wrap-up

September 18, 2015

At the channel show in Boston, one thing seemed to be missing: the channel partners. The usual players were there but for the most part, everyone was asking where the agents were.

The East coast show is all cloud with many booths of with unknown logos. Granite, Bullseye, AT&T, Verizon, Windstream and, ooh, Sprint were the only telcos boothing it.

What Do the Security Hacks Mean for the Channel?

June 30, 2015

It seems every day this month there was either an announcement about a security hack or another note about the NSA spying. Although most people think "It won't happen to me", with the constant news, even the most ignorant, I mean, confident person would have to start to worry. Factor in that many breaches aren't detected for months.

So do you start selling managed security based on FUD?

4 Acquisitions Noted (+2)

May 7, 2015

I missed the announcement that BAE was acquiring SilverSky. SilverSky was a combination of Perimeter Internetworking and Silver Sky that was a major cyber security and network security firm used by a number of large service providers. BAE is a large, global defense contractor.

"Metalogix, the premier provider of management software to move, manage and secure content for Office 365, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, Exchange, Box, Dropbox, Amazon, Google and other leading enterprise content management (ECM) systems, announced today that it has acquired MetaVis Technologies. MetaVis is widely known for its innovative and unified cloud collaboration service management platform." [I would have just said Microsoft Partner, but I guess that doesn't cover it.

A Spotlight on EarthLink

May 7, 2015

EarthLink has come a long way from the days of Mindspring and dial-up. That revenue did allow it to make big mistakes - Helio, Muni Wi-Fi - and make acquisitions to become the company they are today.

From dial-up to muni wi-fi to Clearwire 4G service, EarthLink has tried to stay close to its roots as a consumer ISP. Luckily, they made other moves to become a business servcie provider too.

The Latest Buzz(words) to Offer

April 22, 2015

The CLEC crowd is trying to move beyond the legacy services of network and minutes. Hard to do when customers still want to buy it. In much of the marketing, the services with the most buzz are: Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), Managed WiFi and mobility.

Under UCaaS I will include Collaboration, so Lync, Office 365, Sharepoint, Dropbox, conferencing flavors (audio, web, video), contact centers and the like.
