Telecom Tidbits (Part 2432)

April 11, 2016

VoIP and QoS

Patton started embedding PacketSmart into its SmartNode VoIP CPE. Considering the quality issues on broadband, this is a good move.

Crappy call quality on cell phones lowered the bar enough that VoIP was able to take over on the wireline side.

Telecom Tidbits (Part 2431)

March 29, 2016

On Friday (April 1), Frontier takes over Verizon's territory in Florida, Cali and Texas. "The $10.5 billion acquisition is a big move for Frontier.... The company's current workforce of 19,200 will increase to about 29,200 and its customer base will jump from 3.4 million people to 7.1 million. The move will also boost Frontier's annual revenue from $5.6 billion to $11.4 billion." [source]

A Word About Your Elevator Pitch

March 22, 2016

If I have to ask: Is it like this? You: No.

Is it like that? You: No.

Then you need to work on YOUR pitch some more.

Change or Die

March 18, 2016

Verizon's VP Janet Schijns gave a presentation about Millennials and the Channel. A majority of the polled Millennials did not know what a Channel Partner was. Change or Die. (I thought when Tiffani Bova left Gartner, we would have heard the last of that message, but alas it is still the drum beating.)

It isn't that most partners do NOT want to change.

What Happens in Vegas

March 17, 2016

At the Channel Partners Expo in Vegas, rumors are running wild. Metaswitch-Genband being settled in patent court. Polycom-Mitel cuz money.

Another Broadsoft client gets bought. MagicJack (yes, magicjack) decides to over-bid in order to not be the bridesmaid again.

2 Reasons It is Hard to Sell UC

March 14, 2016

Despite the numerous UC providers crowding the marketplace, the actual sales of UC seats is not skyrocketing. Companies with 25% growth like 8x8, number in the dozens, not in the hundreds.

For some, it is a focus-message mess. They want to appeal to everyone - and that market is already taken.

How To Win at UCaaS

February 3, 2016

Wainhouse research says that the UCaaS industry will grow at a rate of 24% year over year. 8x8 is doing that with their revenue. "Total revenue of $53.2 million increased 29% year-over-year; service revenue of $48.9 million increased 29% year-over-year," despite still losing money.

Seeking Alpha wrote, "RingCentral's move upmarket is substantially increasing their revenue per seat and allowing them to drive the top line." Well, same thing at 8x8, which raised its ARPU to $369 from $305 last year.

Momentum Trolls Windstream (Going Up-Market)

February 2, 2016

I received this email yesterday from Momentum with the letter attached (with far too much private info not blacked out.)

"As many of you already know, Windstream is eradicating their SMB Business (Customers billing under $1500) and sending them letters like the one I have attached. Go get your customers and find them a happy home (preferably Momentum) before someone else does. Let me know how I can assist."

Windstream has decided to go up-market.

Monday Morning Thoughts on Sales and Strategy

February 1, 2016

This testimonial for ANPI by an RLEC is worth listening to just to understand the thinking behind moving to cloud comms. Try at least the first 90 seconds.

Seth Godin's blog today describes not a pyramid, but a Frustum. Seth uses the music business as the example, but I see it in the telecom industry today.

Competing in SaaS or VoIP

January 19, 2016

In this growth hack article, there a number of good points about SaaS companies that can be extended to the VoIP space as well. (Voice is just an app today, right?)

"SaaS is getting increasingly competitive." You think? Look at all of these marketing apps.
