The Moment of Truth in Sales

August 31, 2012

ZMOT is the zero moment of truth. It has changed significantly. If you believe the HBR article about solution selling being dead, then you believe that for savvy buyers, the salesperson is relegated to being a price jockey. It might be true for really technical services like IAAS.

Can You Beat the iPad?

August 16, 2012

As tablet after tablet fail to make it - I am talking to you HP, Blackberry Playbook, Dell Streak, MOTO Xoom, Asus and even Creative - does it make it even harder for another one to launch?

We have three new ones coming out: the Google Nexus 7, Lenovo Thinkpad 2 and Microsost Smooth.

Google Nexus 7 is making the most buzz. It has sleek design and a gret starting price of $199.

You Can't Win on Price

July 24, 2012

Another call today about a cable company stealing the deal because they are giving away the network. You can not compete on price!

The RBOC's have ceded the sub-$500 wireline market to the cablecos. VZ wants to clip the copper, which would destroy the DSL market - what there is it of it.

Strategy Matters

July 24, 2012

"When everyone is playing the same game, your execution is critical." - Seth Godin

"the way you go to market, the structure of your offering, the model of your business--these are sufficient to cause you to lose, regardless of how you play the game."

It's like he was talking about telecom, the ultimate me-too industry. It is even me-too in service delivery - which means it largely sucks.

Microsoft Buys Yammer for $1.2B

June 27, 2012

Microsoft bought Yammer for $1.2 Billion. Yammer is supposed to add Social Media to Sharepoint.

" Yammer now has more than 5 million corporate users, including employees at 85 percent of the Fortune 500. The service allows employees to join a secure, private social network for free and then makes it easy for companies to convert a grassroots movement into companywide strategic initiative."

Talking with the CMO of 8x8

June 25, 2012

8x8 has hit $100 million in annual revenue, making them one of the top 3 Hosted VoIP providers in the US. I had a chance to interview Debbie Jo Severin, Chief Marketing Officer of 8x8 this week.

My first question was about what kinds of marketing 8x8 does. (I didn't know that the Packet8 brand was no longer in use.)

Bad News

June 18, 2012

I read all of HUgh Macleod's new book, Freedom is Blogging in Your Underwear [AFFIL], on the flight to Atlanta to speak at the ISP-CLEC show here. It certainly got me thinking.

Bad news..... new marketing is just the same as old marketing, juts with cooler tools.

A Lesson in Value Proposition

May 23, 2012

This came across my twitter stream this week:

"Must-read for founders: A VC explains how to build a killer value proposition" on VentureBeat by Michael Skok, a Venture Capitalist at North Bridge Venture Partners. His slideshare page contains a couple of really good decks of information about Go-To-Market and Value Prop - two things that I help companies address in this industry.

That's his Go-to-Market diagram.
