2 Lessons from Politics

January 13, 2017

At lunch today with a political consultant, we discussed the presidential campaign. Here are two things that drive me crazy about HRC and DNC that you should think about for your own company.

The first thing is that the same team that lost four years ago (in a primary) was probably not going to win you this election. While I understand loyalty, we are in politics and business to win.

Tidbits #2444 (Telecom and Otherwise)

January 4, 2017

There are too many VoIP and UCaaS providers. Consolidation is required in this space. I think UCaaS has to shift into Voice/Dial-tone (POTS replacement or SIP Trunking with some features) and some collaboration platform. The way it is now - replacing an on-premise PBX with a hosted one - isn't selling very well.

More Retail Stores Going Broke

December 28, 2016

The Limited is just the latest retail chain to go bankrupt. Sports Authority closed earlier this year. Many others are on the slide down into BK.

There is a lesson or two to be learned from retail.

Is SD-WAN the new UC?

December 19, 2016

In 2003, Broadsoft was selling its softswitch to anyone who would buy it. Today, they are trying to sell direct. All in all, it is technology that is still struggling to find its voice.

Today, VeloCloud is selling its SD-WAN software to anyone who will buy it.

It is All Distribution Now

December 13, 2016

Yesterday I saw AVNET advertise 172,000 partners globally. Tech Data has mentioned 62K+. Sandler Partners said they had more than 4,000 sales partners. TCG serves more than 1500 agents.

RingCentral's channel head penned a post about the strategy to hit all the large master agencies.

The Channel Marketing Dilemma

November 30, 2016

I just read this article about analytics for the channel. It makes sense. I like his opening line: "Are my people spending their time on activities that drive sales?" That is key.

But then the article goes sideways, because, for the most part, channel partners don't do demand generation.

Marketing Lesson from the Election

November 9, 2016

A couple of marketing lessons from the campaign. (Non-political).

If your Brand is broken, run a Branding campaign not a negative campaign.

When your brand is broken -- maybe your uptime is three eights instead of nines or maybe your customer service is notoriously awful - the buyer doesn't have trust in you.

Where is the Demand?

September 8, 2016

There are a number of external sales channels: franchises, affiliates, referrals, VAR/inter-connect, systems integrated, agents/brokers (to name a few). It works for more industries than just telecom, real estate and insurance.

All those models are for Sales. Remember though that isn't the same as demand or lead generation or any marketing.

Research Firms Missed Again on UC

August 24, 2016

MarketsandMarkets states that the UCaaS market size is expected to grow from USD 17.35 Billion in 2016 to USD 28.69 Billion by 2021, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.6% during the forecast period.

In contrast, Transparency Research claims, "The opportunity in the global UCaaS market was pegged at US$8.23 bn in 2015 and is projected to be worth US$79.3 bn by 2024. The market is likely to expand at a remarkable CAGR of 29.4% during the forecast period." [TMR]

Last year, TMR predicted, "The global unified communications as a service market is poised for staggering growth, and will be worth US$37.85 billion by 2022, finds Transparency Market Research's latest report.
