The Verge has an article about the impact of Kickstarter on CES in Vegas this week. The most telling quote, "If Sony sold 85,000 watches, we'd call it a failure. When Pebble does it, it's a rousing success." Think about that.

Define your role by being clear and concise on your benefits, values, outcomes that businesses, especially small businesses, can expect and generally receive by utilizing your services versus your many competitors.

I was reading the Stratfor intelligence newsletter with its Top 5 Trends That Will Shape 2014. It's an interesting list.

  1. An enduring detente between Iran and the United States
  2. The rise of nationalist and extremist parties in Europe
  3. Russia and Germany bargain over Central/Eastern Europe and energy policy
  4. China's return to strongman politics
  5. Domestic turmoil and economic stress in India and Turkey

Another article mentioned that Israel is having a water shortage. People joke about water being what we fight the next world war over, but it isn't much of a joke.

I am Not a Social Media Guru

I don't spend all day with my nose in Facebooking, tweeting, pinning.

I don't spend hours each week trialing new schemes on social media platforms.

I understand that social media is just one component of a comprehensive marketing plan.

Social media only makes sense if you have a goal and your target demographic use the platform.

Savvis and Verizon Go Head to Head

I read a headline today that Amazon took a CIA contract away from IBM. Hmmm. IBM, Amazon, Verizon, Savvis, AT&T and others are all fighting for the same contracts.

Meanwhile Savvis is rolling out new integrated solutions to go head-to-head against IBM and Verizon. I can't tell the specifics from the press release because it is filled with keywords and buzz terms that mean nothing.

The Value of UC

Dan Caruso, CEO of Zayo, wrote a post about the profitability of bandwidth. I got to thinking about how it applied to VoIP, specifically UC, Hosted UC, UCaaS, Cloud Comms or whatever silly marketing hashtag we are using this month.

Just the fact that the term has to change so often means that the industry is searching for identity.

It also means that there is a lot of education needed to sell Unified Communications to its full benefit.

I have an interest in Growth Hacking, making a company grow by acquiring users, customers or revenue. The problem I usually face is that in channel sales, the number of agents is not a viable metric.

The Channel looks at it as the more feet on the street we have, the better sales will be. NO!

Do They Even Know Their Business?

Rich Tehrani and I were having an online discussion about JCP shutting down free wi-fi in their stores to save $7M per year. Who says free wi-fi is free?

I commented that maybe JCP customers don't use it. The key to any business is to know as much as you can about your customers.
