The Culture of Complacency

February 14, 2015

"In their book "In Search of Excellence," Tom Peters and Robert Waterman list a "bias for action" as the first of eight attributes that distinguish excellent and innovative companies. Many of the companies they studied were very "analytical in their approach to decision making, but they are not paralyzed by that fact (as so many others seem to be.) In many of these companies, the standard operating procedure is: 'Do it, fix it, try it.'" [WSJ]

Many companies are going through change -- mostly M&A change which isn't the change I mean. EarthLink and Cbeyond were going through very public change - like Dell, Microsoft and others.

News Tidbits Part 2915

February 9, 2015

While Verizon is selling its wireline (including approximately 1.6 million FiOS Internet customers; and approximately 1.2 million FiOS Video customers), AT&T is upgrading U-Verse to 75 Mbps in some areas. Now they will actually be delivering broadband under the new FCC definition.

Frontier - making its 3rd acquisition from the RBOCs - "FTR will have to break the bank to do so, creating huge debt and diluting shares further," per SeekingAlpha. One thing to remember: not one of tehse acquisitions have gone well for Frontier (or Fairpoint).

Competing Against Cable

February 6, 2015

The RBOCs have stopped trying to compete with cable for the consumer market and the small business market. (They just want to sell cell phones, M2M and soon IoT to them). CenturyLink, Windstream, Frontier and Fairpoint still have a huge stake in broadband. Frontier's stake just went up $10B with its purchase of VZ assets.

What I learned from the NFL Playoffs

January 19, 2015

Yesterday the Seattle Seahawks gave up 5 turnovers including 4 interceptions, yet still managed to win the game - in overtime! Here are a couple of lessons from the NFL games yesterday.

Unless the game plan isn't working, stick to it the whole game. The Packers (supposedly) had a winning game plan that they gave up in the 4th quarter when they thought they had the game in the bag.

The Job Jumper and His Rolodex

January 9, 2015

This is the story of the channel manager who about once a year changes jobs. In this business, people change logos often. Even more now with all the consolidation and layoffs. It's a joke at trade shows: "I'm here just to get your new business card."

A Clean Sheet of Paper

December 29, 2014

The new year is like a clean sheet of paper. The above Calvin & Hobbes cartoon talks about how a blanket of snow makes everything new again. January 2nd is like that as well. (No idea why you have to wait for that date to start something or change something.

End of Year Tidbits

December 22, 2014

Stop watching the news. Seriously. It's nothing but depressing stuff. It is no way to end the day (go to sleep) or no way to start the day. Read something for 15 minutes instead.

Can You Find the Bestseller Effect?

December 16, 2014

In the world of telecom - T1's, broadband, WAN - we know who the buyer is and why he is buying - or we assume it based on experience. (Maybe we should stop assuming WHY they buy?) But in the world of IT that encompasses mobile apps, devices, cloud services and more, it is so much who the buyer is but why are they buying. Not why you are selling or what benefit your service provides, but why are THEY buying?

Many conversations I have with clients center around who to target.

4 Tips for the Busy Executive

December 11, 2014

I have a couple of prospective clients that keep delaying projects.

One really wants to do the project but the people aren't in place yet. The time isn't right. Is the time every really right?

About Email Marketing

December 9, 2014

Mojo Marketing is blogging the 12 Days of Telecom Marketing! I was the guest blogger for Day 5 about Email Marketing.

In summary, when people see your email they shouldn't say, "What?! Another one from this guy!" They should say, "Oh, I wonder what he has to say."
