Marketing

It Starts With Strategy

December 4, 2014

What we talked about today was tactics. How do I know? It's always tactics. It's always How do I quickly get customers. That is mainly tactical.

Comcast Merger Will Pressure CLECs

November 19, 2014

The CLEC industry has a few problems:

  1. TDM-to-IP Transition
  2. USF Reform (E-Rate, ETC)
  3. Consolidation
  4. Special Access Pricing

The biggest problem by far is the Comcast-TWC merger. It will replace 2 large MSOs (Comcast + TWC) with 2 much larger service providers (Comcast & Charter). Comcast is already huge - $17B in the last Quarter! Smaller than AT&T's consolidated revenues of $33.0 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2014.

2 Things About Content Marketing

November 7, 2014

One thing about content marketing is that while everyone is talking about, few people are doing it well.

Great quote from GapingVoid about it, "You have to love them every day, even if they don't buy from you every day." Give Value every day. Show that it isn't just about the contract and invoice.

As Seth Godin reminds businesses, media has changed; now everyone is a media company.

3 Reasons Channel Management Needs a Slap

October 31, 2014

It's amazing to me how people who manage channel operations for carriers (and likely have not worked in the channel as a partner in at least 8 years) can give partners advice about running their business. Have you looked inside your own company???

Reason 1 that some people need a slap is Larry Walsh on CPZ saying that partners need to spend money on R&D. Never mind that he doesn't explain what he means by R&D.

Look Another Road Show (and Presentation)

October 28, 2014

Presentation after presentation is what the shows are all about. Sponsors pay for the show, so they get to stand on stage and give a presentation. That would be fine if the presentations didn't suck.

That's right.

What's the Difference?

October 28, 2014

As I have been trying to add up, there has to be 2000 service providers offering some kind of Hosted VoiP. There are about 1000 ILECs of one size or another (NTCA, NCTC, ITTA) and about another 900 MSO's. In addition, the ISPs or ITSPs offering Asterisk service or using Netsapiens, Ipifony, Broad River, or other white label softswitch operator. There are 300+ Broadsoft clients in the US (main of which are ILECs and MSOs).

The Cost of Attention (Advertising)

September 30, 2014

Note: This isn't a political rant. It's a numbers game.

In 2010, current Florida Governor Rick Scott spent $40 million to win the governor's race. The voter turnout was 49% according to the state of Florida.

What Business Are You Really in?

September 26, 2014

For the Cloud Comm providers, it seems like they are in every business except VoIP. They are phone (handset) purveyors, network operators (for all the circuits they provide), tech support, software integration, network monitoring and a host of other managed services. After that, they are voice service providers.

Dell, Gateway, Compaq, IBM - all sold desktops and laptops -- all clunky, not stylish, looked the same - only difference? Maybe price, components.

Are You a Red or Black Ant?

August 28, 2014

Dave Matthews Band's Ants Marching has been in my head all morning.

"When all the little ants are marching Red and black antennas waving we all do it the same we all do it the same way"

Reminds me of telecom.

Seth Godin wrote this morning, "There is no more everyone.
