The Channel Target Cycle

April 8, 2016

In 2006, the shift in targeting went from anyone to a master agent model, where smaller agents rolled up into a larger master agent. The resources were allocated to the masters (and their sub-agents).

In about 2008, the target became VARs. Agents just weren't selling any of the new carriers or new services. Agents weren't selling cloud.

The SD-WAN and Why You Should Care Podcast # 1: Ecessa

April 6, 2016

In the first podcast of the SD-WAN series this month, I talk with Ken LaMere, Director of Channel Sales, from Ecessa as we begin the discussion on SD-WAN and why agents should care.

Ken was on the Convey Cloud Convention explaining SD-WAN and why should anyone care earlier this year. You can catch the webcast here.

Here's a link to an SD-WAN Technology Comparison Brief. It looks at the various forms SD-WAN is taking, whether virtual, cloud-based or premise-based, and gives the pros and cons to each.

Game Over: Comcast and Amazon!

March 21, 2016

The game is over and cable wins.

Comcast may fear competition and bill people for services that they did not receive, but they do have a $6B CLEC business. Most carriers can't say that.

Now the broadband game is changing.

Channel Strategy: A Quick Look

March 21, 2016

Often I hear from channel execs that Agents aren't the future because they aren't moving to selling cloud and managed services fast enough. It is always the MSPs and VARs that will be the partners of the future.

Funny how different vendors are trying different things. Fonality is placing bets on both sides as they announced both a distribution deal with Ingram Micro and an exclusive deal with The (Agent) Alliance.

By the Numbers

February 10, 2016

Some interesting stats I have seen.

Saw stats that Vonage has 514,000 business seats.

"Birch recently announced the addition of 80,000 buildings to its Metro-Fiber network in November 2015." I wonder which cable provider they signed a wholesale agreement.

"Broadvoice brings its significant growth trajectory to the initiative: It serves more than 200,000 customers, with its business segment growing by 125% in 2015 alone." [CV mag]

The Monitoring Master Move

November 20, 2015

This week marks the second master agency that has decided to get into monitoring. It seems like a bold move to go from back office sales support to resemble a NOC (network operations center).

In the case of Telarus, they bought the company and are pushing it out to their partners. Telarus has some IT skills in the software space - building and running GeoQuote.

Everyone Wants You to be an MSP

November 5, 2015

Whether it is the keynote at a channel conference or a master agency, everywhere you look the message seems to be: Yo Agent, become a MSP!

So for a few years now, the keynotes, most notably from a Gartner analyst, have been a singular message: become a cloud broker or service provider or die!

CLECs have been trying to transition to cloud - most notably TelePacific, EarthLink and Cbeyond (now Birch). As TBI's Ken Mercer writes, "We've been selling telecom services for years.

What Does a Master Agency Look Like?

October 27, 2015

Years ago, master agencies were mostly telecom brokers. Today, with cloud services, hardware, data center, managed services, mobility and adding their own services, master agencies have morphed.

The models vary greatly. A couple, like COLOTRAQ, are specialists.

Where is the Channel Going?

October 26, 2015

There have been several announcements lately about channel programs from Windstream, AT&T, InterNap, Integra and others. In a few cases, the announcements are in defense of reduction in force. In the wake of layoffs, the carriers are defending their channel position. In unison they are singing, "We still like the channel!"

The Cable Triumverate

October 4, 2015

At a master agency, Microcorp One-on-One, the Cable 3 Sisters gave a presentation together. They have been sharing booth space for a couple of years - and presenting together for a while. This was my first view of it.

The push is on to fiber.
