Moving and Shaking the Industry

June 20, 2011

Cbeyond opens up for business in Boston. Agents rejoice as they get to sell a booming brand to the SMB space in Boston.

AboveNet looks to have a private equity buyer.

Another fiber provider is getting an infusion of equity from a new private equity partner.

One of the original Broadsoft providers, CommX, was acquired by Keyon Holdings.

Lightyear Network Solutions has a new Sprint MVNO agreement that will allow it to offer its 60k current customers some new wireless products as well as its agent channel.

88 acquires a cloud company named Zerigo, which offers managed DNS, VPS and Cloud servers and monitoring. This move puts 88 on par with Cbeyond, Intermedia.Net and Parallels -- all companies that are truly treating Hosted VoIP as just another service in the cloud.

And So the Bankers Cheer

June 14, 2011

Intermedia is a hosted Exchange company that ventured into hosted VoIP. That venture landed them an LOI (letter of intent to buy) from a private equity firm. On the heels of that, Intermedia decided to grab Zlago to bolster the cloud channel push that Oak Hill Capital Partners wants. Combined they reach about 7000 MSP's and VAR's, according to this report.

All Those in Favor

June 3, 2011

The Benton Foundation notes that there are over 10,000 comments to the FCC about the ATT/T-Mobile merger. Unions and relatives are competing against consumer groups for the robo-comments.

Meanwhile, MetroPCS officially opposed it, but wants to buy all the assets that ATT will have to spin off.

"The New Jersey Division of Rate Counsel says the Federal Communications Commission should deny the application of AT&T to acquire T-Mobile USA's assets and operations from Deutsche Telekom AG because the proposed transaction is not in the public interest," according to Benton.

Crazy News Tidbits

May 27, 2011

"The U.S. Postal Service continues to hemorrhage money, posting a net loss of $747 million in April, and an accumulated net loss of $3.3 billion in the first seven months of its fiscal year." [BtoB] That's crazy! It is time to privatize the USPS and maybe people have to go pickup their own mail.

This guy was so mad at TW Cable that he took out full page ads to yell at them!

The ATT-T-Mobile Merger Rumors

May 19, 2011

Originally I had heard that the break-up fee was $3B, which meant (to me) that this deal was going to go through. Then there were reports it was $6B, which means there is no stopping it. (And let's not forget that AT&T cooperates nicely with the NSA and other government groups, who will put pressure on to allow this merger to go through.)

The Congressional hearings last week, where Stephenson basically said that although AT&T has a lot of spectrum, they have mismanaged that spectrum. Nice. So the whole industry pays for your mistakes?

Anyway rumor today is that AT&T will offer up wireline divestiture as a merger condition.

Tele-Pacific Buys into Hosted

May 6, 2011

Tele-Pacific is buying its way into Hosted PBX with its acquisition of Telekenex. TelePacific will gain approximately 1,000 business customers and 122 employees along with the hosted PBX platform. Tele-Pacific will run Telekenex as a separate channel, which is a good thing.

This is a good move for Tele-Pacific as it continues to dominate its region with more services plus another data center.

CenturyLink Buys Savvis

April 27, 2011

It hasn't even finished swallowing Qwest and CenturyLink makes a deal to buy Savvis for $2.5B plus the assumption of $700M in debt. From the press release, "With the addition of Savvis, CenturyLink will achieve global scale as a managed hosting and colocation provider and will accelerate its ability to deliver quality managed hosting and cloud capabilities to its business customers. The combination of CenturyLink's hosting and network assets with Savvis' proven solutions in colocation, managed hosting and cloud services substantially enhances CenturyLink's capabilities and provides the company with a solid platform for future growth." So they want to be global?

"Together, CenturyLink and Savvis will operate 48 data centers located in North America, Europe, and Asia with more than 1.9 million square feet of gross floor space; a robust, national 207,000 route mile fiber network; a 190,000 mile global access network; and have a customer list that includes a majority of the Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies."

Everyone is chasing cloud and global. It's interesting because while there are 1000 companies in the Fortune 1000, there are over 5 million other businesses who are looking for business services.

A Message for Dan Hesse

April 26, 2011

The merger of AT&T and T-Mobile will likely have extreme anti-competitive effects on the mobile industry. Certainly, the DOJ and the two F-Agencies (FTC and FCC) need to take note that mobile is churning the service economy of America right now and this merger could derail that. That being said, I have this to say to the CEO of Sprint, Dan Hesse:

You have lawyers and lobbyists and SVP's. Let them carry this fight for you.

Smoothstone Gets Bought

April 20, 2011

Consolidation continues in the Hosted VoIP space as West Corporation, which owns Intercall, Intrado and other businesses, acquired Smoothstone today for $120M. This is on the heels of InterCall, a subsidiary of West Corporation and the world's largest conferencing and collaboration services provider, acquiring Preferred One Stop Technologies Limited ("POSTcti"), a leading provider of components, systems, professional services and hosted services for Unified Communications ("UC") in Europe on February 1st. [POSTcti provides Unifiied Desktop primarily].

This certainly helps West to become a big player in the Hosted UC space globally. SmoothStone expanded into Europe back in November (on the MPLS network of Masergy).
