I have a firm belief that most mergers are just ways to make the books look better by clouding the numbers. Take this headline from the Morning Journal, "CenturyLink has profitable second quarter, primarily due to acquisition". I agree with that.

The telling number is the revenue or income or EBITA, but this metric: "CenturyLink added more than 29,000 high-speed Internet customers in the second quarter, compared to 28,000 in the second quarter of 2009, the company reported." HUH?

Tele-Pacific Acquires Some O1

"TelePacific Communications, the largest CLEC providing integrated voice and data telecommunications services to the small and medium-sized business ("SMB") customer segment in California and Nevada, today announced a definitive agreement to acquire the SMB customer base and network of O1 Communications ("O1"). TelePacific will also acquire a SAS 70 Type II certified data center located in Sacramento, California. ... Under the terms of the agreement, TelePacific Communications will gain approximately 1000 business customers in California.

FiberNet Changes Hands (Again)

One Communications sold off its FiberNet holdings - 100,000access lines and about 3,500 route miles - to NTELOS, according to a press release. The price tag: "for cash consideration of approximately $170 million." Huh? What is that?

MagicJack Merges With VocalTec

Rob Powell did some excellent reporting on this merger HERE.

VocalTec Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq:VOCL) is the inventor of VOIP and the softphone. It's a patent house of about 30 patents. VocalTec just merged with YMAX.

Two Mergers

Two resellers merged: GLOBALINX Purchases TMC for 'Robust' Agent Channel. GLOBALINX is an IP reseller. TMC is a TDM reseller. Should be interesting to see how the Bell-heads work with the Net-heads, since the thinking is way different (and so is the approach to sales).

Zayo Buys AFS

As Rob Powell predicted, the self-proclaimed Fiber Bigot, Dave Rusin, CEO of Rochester-based American Fiber Systems, sold the company to Zayo. Some reports were that the sale price was $185M, but Zayo is stating that number is ridiculous. The original press release did not offer a price tag.

Consider that Zayo financed $250M in debt at 10.25% in April. It's AGL acuisition is still pending. Zayo has a capital intensive business (building out fiber always is). And it's a VC backed company. Zayo smacks of a roll-up waiting for the right time to resell.

Not the Way I Saw It

Speakeasy is merging with the merging Covad and Megapath in a menage of sorts, according to this press release from MegaPath.

I saw New Edge Networks, the EarthLink company, joining with the other DLEC's. Didn't see this one coming.

"Through a combination of direct sales and a national network of more than 8,000 IT consultant partners, Speakeasy has experienced significant customer growth, with more than 30,000 small business customers nationwide.

Can Copper Turn to Gold?

People ask me about the CenturyLink-Qwest merger. I'm still trying to get over the CTEL-Embarq merger. And wrapping my head around bigger is better when that has been proven to be a hoax recently (Too Big to Fail?) is causing a headache.

What is With the FCC?

Julius Genachowski as Chairman of the FCC did a decent job on the framework of ideas that is called the National Broadband Plan. In it, he concluded that we would need 500 MHz of spectrum to make it happen. Notice he didn't say fiber or wireline, but bet on wireless.

And he already grabbed 25 MHz of spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band to get started.
