Broadsoft Buys Leonid

January 13, 2015

Oh, happy days for the folks at Leonid Systems as some of them are going home to the fold. Broadsoft bought Leonid, which means that internally that have admitted defeat in being able to make a portal that anyone would want to demo or use. At least, they were able to admit it.

The BSFT sales folks were already pushing Leonid - to the tune of $3 million in revenue per year, which will now be an inorganic blip on the revenue stream of BSFT.

The Year That Was a Mess

December 24, 2014

We have a huge Net Neutrality debate, Open Internet fights (especially between Netflix and ISPs) and peering duels (between ISPs and backbones, notice the pattern?). Why? Lack of broadband competition.

Big mergers still in play: AT&T buying DirecTV to keep up on TV; and Comcast in a three way with Charter over TWC.

What Will Consolidation Mean in 2015

December 11, 2014

Rob Powell has a good post collecting some of the M&A activity this year. He makes note that the Comcast-TWC-Charter transaction will create a $7B business CLEC. Seven billion dollar business is larger than Level3 (at $6.4B) or Windstream (with just under $6B) or even Frontier (whose $4.5B is mainly residential). Relatively, CenturyLink is doing $17B.

Comcast Merger Will Pressure CLECs

November 19, 2014

The CLEC industry has a few problems:

  1. TDM-to-IP Transition
  2. USF Reform (E-Rate, ETC)
  3. Consolidation
  4. Special Access Pricing

The biggest problem by far is the Comcast-TWC merger. It will replace 2 large MSOs (Comcast + TWC) with 2 much larger service providers (Comcast & Charter). Comcast is already huge - $17B in the last Quarter! Smaller than AT&T's consolidated revenues of $33.0 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2014.

Two UC Providers Cash Out

November 5, 2014

Phoenix-based Telesphere announced that Vonage would be acquiring them for $114 million in stock and cash. Teleshpere's Broadsoft-powered UCaaS revenue is just north of $40 million, so it is about 2.5x times revenue - a deal that many Cloud Comm Alliance guys will now be looking for.

This move by Vonage follows its acquisition of Vocalocity a year ago in order to enter the business voice market. The acquisition of Telesphere allows Vonage to enter the Enterprise space.

The Stock Market is Unkind

October 22, 2014

Yahoo made $6.3 billion on the Alibaba stock IPO. It's quarterly revenue was $1.094 billion of which more than $200 million in mobile ad revenue. Investors want it to stop making acquisitions (but $3 bill in cash means it will buy something) and to merge with AOL.

McDonald's revenue plunged 30%.

Moves in the Market

October 3, 2014

Windstream has acquired Chicago-based Business Only Broadband, a fixed wireless enterprise services provider with operations in Chicago, New York City, northern New Jersey and Milwaukee. [press release] While I know that BOB says enterprise broadband, I can't fathom what WIND is going to do with BOB. Other CLECs have acquired fixed wireless assets - including Covad/Megapath, Telepacific and recentlyAirband by UNSi (acquired by GTT this week). Fixed Wirless works when you have a team dedicated to it.

Agent and Reseller M&A

October 1, 2014

GTT Communications just acquired UNSi for $40 million. GTT is an interesting company. Interesting in how they put makeup on. There are numerous descriptions of the company:

This from Reuters: "GTT Communications, Inc., formerly Global Telecom & Technology, Inc., is a global network integrator providing a portfolio of Wide-Area Network (WAN), dedicated Internet access and managed data services.

The Expo News Update

September 9, 2014

Datapipe, a global managed IT provider, acquired Layered Tech to add to its US federal government business. Layered Tech adds security and compliance to Datapipe's managed cloud service. It is not unusual to pick off a specialty shop since developing the service and hiring the talent is an uphill battle today.

tw telecom says that the new CIO of the combined Level3/twt will be twt's own Harold Teets.

What Did I Miss Part 34

September 4, 2014

Merger Details Emerge

In the mix of the Comcast-TWC merger will emerge a new MSO created by divestitures and swaps called GreatLand Connections, previously called SpinCo. Charter will own one-third and operate it, says Telecompetitor.

The FCC has received a lot of comments on this merger docket and many are anti-merger. I think it would be a mess for consumers - and the result would be a much larger Comcast that is too large already.
