Recently on LinkedIn and twitter, home for the haters, there has been noise about the death of PBX. Toshiba and Avaya certainly give credence to that thought. However, analyst research demonstrates that PBX seats still outpace Cloud seat sales. That gets muddied by MITEL's numbers for "cloud" seats (3 million) and Broadsoft's numbers for both "cloud" and "UC".

The State of UC&C - Part 3

September 14, 2016

I have a lot of snippets on the UCAAS and UC&C space to share, in no certain order.

We have seen consolidation in the contact center space - ININ-Genesys and others. It isn't over yet. There are too many players in the marketplace, and for right this moment money is still cheap.

UC Tidbits #2441

July 5, 2016

So many pieces of news about the UCaaS and UC&C segment that I just wanted to cover the highlights (with links) for your perusal.

New ReportsWeb Global UC&C study:

"The global market is gradually experiencing the transition from legacy telephony services and messaging platforms to new UC&C services and platforms. We expect more number of global deployments of UC&C in coming years, driven by growing popularity of applications, such as rich collaboration, mobility, video conferencing, and telepresence." Key word is gradually.

Tidbits #2438

Data Center, M&A, BK, Innovation, UCAAS and more in this episode of Tidbits.

Sendhub,a business SMS provider that raised $10M, was acquired by Cameo Global, a global managed IT shop that does some contact center work.

Salesforce's leadership position in CRM now gets e-commerce with Demandware $2.8B acquisition

What Are They Feeding Enterprise?

March 9, 2016

After a 27 hour trip to Enterprise Connect, I can safely say that we have an unqualified me-too business. Video conferencing and collaboration - now called meetings and workflow - were printed on every booth. Here is what I saw.

Cisco demonstrated Spark, which I thought was for SMB, but is being pitched to Enterprise especially with its big hook into Salesforce.

VoIP Tidbits (Part 2430)

February 29, 2016

ANPI announced that it was launching a residential package. That will be hard to do on a Broadsoft platform, because the licensing is deemed too expensive. One telecom exec mentioned that ANPI was following the Vonage model. I disagree.

Telecom Tidbits #2429

February 17, 2016

First up is Apple versus the FBI over end-to-end encryption on the iPhone. For privacy nerds, Barry Eisler's new book, God's Eye View, was a scary realization that the NSA has too much reach -- and very little oversight.

Over at AVC, there is a discussion about privacy - or rather whether you think Apple should bother - or if all info will be hacked, why not just let it out to stop terrorists and child porn??

Telecom Tidbits (Part 2921)

October 20, 2015

M&A in the data center space as Colologix acquires New Jersey based Net Access. Net Access, LLC is a "colocation and workspace recovery provider with over 200K gross square footage across three enterprise-grade facilities in Northern New Jersey." NJ is the new target for Greater NYC. Net Access has 700 customers! Now cologix will have 24 data centers in 9 markets.

Moves in the Market

October 3, 2014

Windstream has acquired Chicago-based Business Only Broadband, a fixed wireless enterprise services provider with operations in Chicago, New York City, northern New Jersey and Milwaukee. [press release] While I know that BOB says enterprise broadband, I can't fathom what WIND is going to do with BOB. Other CLECs have acquired fixed wireless assets - including Covad/Megapath, Telepacific and recentlyAirband by UNSi (acquired by GTT this week). Fixed Wirless works when you have a team dedicated to it.

2 Studies and Some Tidbits

July 16, 2013

Metaswitch did a study on cloud + telcos + SMB and found that telcos may not be the trusted cloud providers that small business wants. "Existing phone providers overlooked for IP: Just 10 percent of pre-IP SMBs would even consider getting information about IP communications from their existing phone provider. Eighteen percent of 50-plus-employee SMBs would contact rival providers directly."

Another take on the Metaswitch survey demonstrates that the speed of a quote (and knowing what you are talking about) are factors to the sale.
