Tidbits and Interesting Things Part 140

March 25, 2015

Some interesting services around the sector.

ADTRAN has field services that ITSP's can hire to perform site surveys and install Hosted VoIP deployments. (No idea about cabling, but that seems to be an issue for national providers. Local or regional providers tend to offer cabling for a price.)

UC Trends in Q1 2015

March 24, 2015

Just back from the CP Expo in Vegas, I am still catching up and digesting what is in store for 2014 in the Channel and it looks like the Hosted VoIP space. Most noise at the show was around Hosted VoIP.

Two studies out about SMB trends. One from Intermedia.Net late last year is around mobile trends.

Softphone From a Handset Maker

February 9, 2015

The Telecom Reseller has a report that Grandstream released an Android app.

"Grandstream Networks has announced the launch of Grandstream Wave, a free softphone application for Android devices. Grandstream Wave allows business and residential users to make and receive SIP based voice calls over Wi-Fi using any Android mobile devices running Android 4.0 or higher. This free app can be downloaded from the Google Pay Store and supports the integration of up to six SIP accounts, six-way voice conferencing and a number of telephony features."

CLECs releasing apps - like Voxox - isn't unusual.

Competing Against Cable

February 6, 2015

The RBOCs have stopped trying to compete with cable for the consumer market and the small business market. (They just want to sell cell phones, M2M and soon IoT to them). CenturyLink, Windstream, Frontier and Fairpoint still have a huge stake in broadband. Frontier's stake just went up $10B with its purchase of VZ assets.

Study Data Doesn't Mean Much Sometimes

December 19, 2014

"Two technologies, namely mobility and Unified Communications and Collaboration (UC&C), are significantly transforming the work patterns in organizations, " writes ReportBuyer. The release goes on to talk about mobile converging with UC&C and BYOD to create mobile UC&C plus security. There is a specific market for mobile UC&C and BYOD. It is not an SMB problem.

What Did I Miss Part 34

September 4, 2014

Merger Details Emerge

In the mix of the Comcast-TWC merger will emerge a new MSO created by divestitures and swaps called GreatLand Connections, previously called SpinCo. Charter will own one-third and operate it, says Telecompetitor.

The FCC has received a lot of comments on this merger docket and many are anti-merger. I think it would be a mess for consumers - and the result would be a much larger Comcast that is too large already.

Innovation isn't About Replacement

August 25, 2014

In an article about the over-valuation of Uber, was this tidbit:

"In 1980, McKinsey & Company was commissioned by AT&T (whose Bell Labs had invented cellular telephony) to forecast cell phone penetration in the U.S. by 2000. The consultant's prediction, 900,000 subscribers, was less than 1% of the actual figure, 109 Million.

What Did I Miss?

August 15, 2014

A couple of data center acquisitions happened (and some other notes). Shaw Communications, a Canadian cableco, came down to acquire the data center company, ViaWest, for about $1.2 Billion from the private equity owners. [pr]

The other move: Alpheus bought StratITsphere's retail datacenter business.

It's TruPhone's World

July 9, 2014

Rich Tehrani ran TruPhone's service through the real world lab after doing an interview with them [here].

I don't travel internationally (domestic travel is enough of a pain in the ass to deal with. Don't get me started.) But the TruPhone World plan is a cool idea: 1 SIM card for 66 countries for voice, text and data. Boom!

Mobile Device Management is Booming

June 24, 2014

A couple weeks ago a buddy called me to ask about a hot product that he heard was selling like hotcakes - MDM - mobile device management.

Apparently, MetTel is doing a bang up job selling MDM via a white-label arrangement from Airwatch.

MDM is trending for companies that are worried about controlling emails, documents, files and confidential information from flowing out of the company. MDM allows for security measures on smartphones, laptops, tablets and its users.
