The Cable Triumverate

October 4, 2015

At a master agency, Microcorp One-on-One, the Cable 3 Sisters gave a presentation together. They have been sharing booth space for a couple of years - and presenting together for a while. This was my first view of it.

The push is on to fiber.

The Show Wrap-up

September 18, 2015

At the channel show in Boston, one thing seemed to be missing: the channel partners. The usual players were there but for the most part, everyone was asking where the agents were.

The East coast show is all cloud with many booths of with unknown logos. Granite, Bullseye, AT&T, Verizon, Windstream and, ooh, Sprint were the only telcos boothing it.

An SDN-WAN Primer for Channel Partners

September 1, 2015

I had an interesting conversation with Ken LaMere, Director of Channel Sales at Ecessa, that resulted in am email interview about SDN, software defined network, with Ken and Mike Siegler, VP Development & Technical Support. I was letting this acronym build momentum before I wrote about it. This is a good primer on SDN for channel partners.

Question 1: The Channel saw tw telecom delivering Dynamic Bandwidth prior to the Level3 acquisition.

Are You Frustrated With MPLS?

June 17, 2015

When I read press releases like this I laugh: "Despite the mounting frustration with MPLS connectivity costs and inflexibility, many customers still do not believe the Internet can provide the security and performance needed for today's business-critical traffic." MPLS is inflexible? It isn't inflexible; it is just complex.

Over the last seven years, I have watched many network admins try to wrestle with MPLS. Virtual pathways on a private network have been around since the days of frame relay.

What The Channel is Selling

May 27, 2014

Finance is buying MPLS (or IP-VPN or VPLS - depending on what flavor of private networking that the carrier is using). Banks, credit unions, insurance and other financial companies have a unique set of regulations to follow, including ones that define storage.

Healthcare is also buying MPLS. Healthcare has a mandate for private networking, encryption and security, all driven by the HITECH Act and Rule-making.

What to Do About Dipping revenue and Profits?

August 15, 2013

These headlines are worrisome.

Weaker-Than-Expected Channel Sales Impact CenturyLink

tw telecom Revenue Grows, Profit Dips

Windstream Profit Falls 22%, Business-Service Revenue Up

Revenue is up, profit is down.

Convergence is Upon Us

August 11, 2013

For years we talked about converging voice and data. Now that most voice traffic is VoIP riding on data networks (cellular, broadband, T1, MPLS, etc.), we can say Converged. But there is another convergence happening - the world of telco and IT. CompTIA, Cloud Services Community and other groups are working hard to get VARs to either become telecom agents or work with them.

Should Hosted UC Providers Offer Network?

July 28, 2013

Stage 2 just announced a Northeast build of an MPLS network. Telesphere has one too. West IP, too. Why do these Hosted UC companies need to offer network? For some, it is a way to handle Quality of Service, which is linked to customer satisfaction.

One Deal And One Bullhorn

May 9, 2013

UNSI has been in the news lately. It was originally American Broadband, reselling DSL nationally. Then it changed its name to United Network Services, Inc. and became a facilities-based carrier, with 18 Points of Presence (PoPs) and interconnections (and NNIs) to over 150 carriers in the US (including cable, DSL, wireless, CLEC and ILEC). "UNSi's partners are able to leverage the relationships with these carriers, paired with the cost savings and convenience of working with a single partner, under one invoice."

Growing Out an IT Business

April 8, 2013

This is a slide from EarthLink's earnings presentation. Basically, telecom spending is flat and it is roughly 11% of what companies spend on IT services. So if you were looking for growth where would you turn? Oh, yeah, IT services.
