Smoothstone Has Patience with Sprint

Sprint finally lands a partner in its Mobile Convergence system. After spending much of 2010 talking with Sprint about the MVNO and Integration options, I applaud the patience of Smoothstone, which announced today the availability of Smoothstone's cloud-based voice solutions combined with Mobile Integration delivered over the Sprint Global MPLS network to provide unprecedented flexibility and performance for the most dynamic and demanding businesses. In English, that means that Smoothstone's softswitch (Broadsoft it seems) is connected to Sprint's network via an MPLS link to allow customers that also have a Sprint mobile phone to have full integration with the Hosted PBX. In essence, the Sprint cell phone becomes an extension on the PBX.

I moderated the panel at ITEXPO about The Importance of Bundling for Stickiness with Cbeyond, Broadvox and Tele-Pacific. If a carrier has a bundle and it looks like every other bundle, it quickly becomes a commodity that is sold on price. Think Integrated T1 or Dynamic T1 or SIP Trunk.

New Edge Networks, an EarthLink company, has stretched beyond the MPLS over DSL model to include other access methods such as cable and EVDO.

The FCC has written a protectic order for Inter-Carrier Compensation finally! "Developing a Unified Inter-Carrier Compensation Regime, establishing just and reasonable rates, Connect America, high-cost universal Service Support and the National broadband Plan for Our Future. Adopted a Protective Order in this proceeding." (Dkt No. 10-90 01-92 05-337 07-135 09-51)  Just means that you can provide data redacted for privacy. But it does mean that the FCC is moving forward.

According to the press release today, Sprint just annoounced Wholesale Mobile Integration. Not true. Last October at Broadsoft Connections, Sprint was talking about MVNO options like this. At the Channel Partners Expo in Vegas in february, I tracked down the Sprint Product Manager for this offering.

What's Up with the New MegaPath

MegaPath just completed its three-way merger with Covad and Speakeasy. I had some questions for the company and Rich Sabin, Director of Marketing, was nice enough of answer them.


1. Now that Speakeasy, Covad and MegaPath are one organization, how will this affect the Channel (Agents)?
