Waiting on the Channel

June 15, 2017

Whether it is TPX CEO Richard Jalkut or other channel executives, providers are impatiently waiting on the channel to jump off selling network and start selling other things.

The products that have been launched recently sit in big buckets titled IOT, Cyber-Security, Managed Services, SD-WAN and of course UC (UCaaS, UCC, WCC).

Rich Tehrani has a nice read about AI and analytics transforming companies like Vodafone.

COLOTRAQ has a new IT Risk/Cyber-security Assessment and Planning Service.

Telecom Tidbits (Part 2452)

April 11, 2017

Coming at you from the Channel show in Vegas, where TelePacific reveals its new brand as TPX Communications. Tele and Pacific didn't fit a managed services provider with a nationwide reach. TPX is more interested in selling UCaaS, managed IT, SD-WAN and managed security these days. The name change is to reflect that.

Telecom Tidbits (#2449)

March 21, 2017

Telecom is still broken. Ordering a 1GB Internet port in a Lit building has turned from a 2 week turn up to a 100-day pain in the ass.

In cable news, you get a site survey done supposedly before quoting. You get the quote; give it to the customer who says Yes. You get paperwork; customer signs paperwork.

Will SD-WAN Crush Cisco?

March 14, 2017

As more and more providers add SD-WAN, what happens to Cisco (and ADTRAN and Juniper)?

Think about this: SD-WAN providers use an appliance as the CPE or end-point. This appliance can function as a switch, router and more. It can be a firewall, a wireless access point and more.

Telecom Tidbits (part # 2445)

An interesting find: There is a CIO survey which finds Microsoft Azure will overtake Amazon AWS for Infrastructure as a Service (from July 2016).

Microsoft has been far behind AWS but then they started later too. This study shows that AWS has 45% share of public cloud infrastructure market -- more than Microsoft, Google, IBM combined.

Amazon launched a conferencing service called Chime.aws.

A Quick Look at Emerging Technologies for Next Week

January 31, 2017

Heading into ITEXPO next week, I am prepping for my session on Differentiation for SPs (Marketing) as well as my Women in Tech panel. The week after that I am in Nashville for FISPA speaking on SD-WAN, Marketing Fiber (FTTx) and a couple of other marketing topics. Then I am speaking at a sales kick-off on SD-WAN and more. That's why I want to take a quick run down on emerging technology.

CompTIA's 2016 MSP Study

July 11, 2016

In CompTIA's 2016 MSP study, the take-away is that MSPs expect to make more revenue, but they don't know how that will be. "Their optimism is countered by continuing worries about their role in a market increasingly dominated by cloud computing solutions and by a persistent problem with employee retention," reports the CompTIA press release.

"But bullishness on future business is tempered by worries about margin erosion. Just over half of the firms cite margin erosion as a factor that keeps them awake at night." Every sector of telecom and IT is seeing price pressure.

LinkedIn to Join the Microsoft Suite

June 13, 2016

Let's start Monday with some small transactions.

First up, Blue Coat is selling itself to Symantec for $4.65 Billion. The cyber-security software company was going to go public via an IPO, but chose the private sale route, which seemed a safer bet for the PE firm, Bain Capital, that bought Blue Coat in 2015 for $2.4B and financed acquisitions to bolster the product portfolio to annual revenues of $598 Million. Blue Coat lost $289 million in those same 12 months.

The Forecast Calls for a New Strategy

June 7, 2016

Some folks didn't particularly care for the forecast in my podcast with Acuity.

"Hope is not a strategy. [I have a little bit on strategy by PWC here.]

One thing about the channel: Most people are heads down just getting from payroll to payroll with no time or desire to look up and pivot.
